Check Out Alexandria Carter’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Carter.

Hi Alexandria , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Alexandria is an Honors graduate of University of Memphis, 500HR comprehensive Pilates instructor, and proud Memphis native. Her lifelong passion for movement began through sports like tennis, cheerleading, and track. She has years of experience teaching yoga where she is 200HR certified and was eager to deepen her connection to mindful movement through Pilates. With a unique background as a contortionist and years of strength training, Alexandria brings a dynamic and well-rounded approach to every class she teaches. She appreciates how Pilates both challenges and strengthens the body in a balanced, sustainable way.

She curates her very own wellness retreat called YAMS: Yoga and Mimosas. This retreat offers community and a chance to slow down and connect back to yourself while connecting with others.

Outside of teaching Alexandria is an active performing contortionist and has shared a stage with artists such as SZA appearing in her music video “Shirt” and performing for international commercials and private events.
She’s currently adding aerial apparatus to her repertoire. She lived in LA for 10years acting in various main stream productions and has recently brought her talents back home to Memphis.

She’s enjoys others forms of art mediums such as painting, writing, crochet, music, festivals, traveling, content creating, and currently adding DJing to her resume.

She’s also a cat mom to her 6 year old kitten named Copper.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Along the way through trials I’ve found myself struggling with mental health anxiety, panic attacks and depression. Though it may not be the best fit for everyone I fought hard to find the light and lead myself through it with movement, meditation, and community. It’s been a long time coming but I can say that I am free of those ailments. And use all my tools whenever I feel the need to combat those unwanted emotions.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I teach reformer Pilates full time. I’m known for a challenging fun and supportive class. I’m most proud of supporting seasoned bodies through movement encouraging them that they have a place in fitness as well. What sets me apart is my passion and sweetness. I’m able to be tough with a smile and make the sweat worthwhile. I also practice what I preach and have the proof to back up all that I do. Being an athlete and contortionist is a bonus to help others reach their full potential.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you’re just starting out it’s okay to be nervous. Everyone has had their 1st day their 1st time. Enjoy the process of being new, soaking up all you can learn, and the support of being corrected. After years of practice and teaching I still love the opportunity to be a student and pick up new movements, new cues, and new ways to activate muscles. The only regret I have to fitness is not starting sooner!
