We’re looking forward to introducing you to Charisse Duncan. Check out our conversation below.
Charisse, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’ve started learning how to play the piano. It was a childhood dream of mine to play, so I’m honoring my inner child by doing so. I found a great instructor who has been patient with me since I’m a complete beginner.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I’m Charisse Duncan. I’m an artist and community organizer. I currently paint watercolor portraits, but I have experience using acrylic, gouache, and oil paints. I’m also the founder of Queers Who Create, which is a community-based art space for Queer femme creatives and centers introverted, neurodivergent, and QTBIPOC folks. I started Queers Who Create in May of 2025 and was able to have two successful events since then. I’ve also started pursuing a career in commercial modeling in 2022.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Perfectionism, rigid religious beliefs, and people pleasing tendencies. These behaviors were once a part of my identity, but now I realize how restricting these traits were to me and my work as an artist. Releasing these traits have been such a relief for me creatively and personally. I feel more authentic and connected to myself. I’m no longer afraid to create “bad” art, Agnosticism resonates with me now, and I put my needs first before giving my energy to others.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I have a strong bond with my parents. They both lend me their ears and undivided attention whenever I want to discuss mundane parts of my life or any struggles that I’m facing. They remember small details about me, ask questions, offer advice, and enjoy hearing updates about my life. I’m truly grateful for them.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! I make a conscientious effort to be my most authentic self in public. I value honesty and integrity. However, I’ve learned that it’s ok to gatekeep certain parts about myself or personality.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes. I’m thankful for the people in my life who support me and my goals, but I’m aware that what I think of myself is most important. I choose to validate myself and my journey despite who chooses to support me or not. I’m an introvert and spend a lot of time by myself anyway, so it’s not too difficult.
