Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Fox.
Ruth, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have a unique upbringing. I am originally from Dublin, Ireland. I moved to America with my parents when I was small. Though I am a California girl who loves the beach, I still slip into my accent on occasion. I’ve got the social, fun, light-heartedness every Irish person has. The Irish are known for their storytelling abilities through each and every art form. I want to tell stories through acting. It truly is the only path for me. I was whisked into the performance world at a very young age, studied theatre in University, and now reside in Los Angeles with a fervor for finding and giving inspiration. Though my heart lays in theatre, I do love all mediums of the craft. I belong on television. Telling stories. Breathing them. Living the characters’ experiences. I am hungry for more and more experiences, to tell people of those experiences. That is why I act. Storytelling is to bring the community together at its core. I love humans. I love our unique journeys. I love our abilities. Living in Los Angeles has proven to be an eccentric journey in itself for me. I have met some challenges and horrible experiences that I would not wish upon anyone else, yet they have given me perspective on life I am grateful for, but I also have had some of the biggest and brightest experiences a girl chasing her dream could ask for. I would not trade them for the world. I constantly struggle with money. I constantly struggle with the thought, “Am I good enough?”. This place is expensive and difficult. But I truly feel it in my bones that I will succeed in my career and my overall happiness. The hard part is to remember that sometimes. My parents taught me perseverance to be stubborn. They also taught me that life could be unfair, but our choices shape our outcomes and happiness. I am at peace with who I am and what I am striving for. Bring on the good days, bring on the bad. They all shape me.
OH! I also paint! I love to paint! A beautiful sunset is one of my favorite things in life; it reaches down in me and hugs my very soul. So I paint tiny little sunsets on tiny little canvases for my larger than life love of colors. I love creativity in any form. It’s important for me to be creative every day in some way. Painting is fun and fulfilling.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am an actress. I tell stories. I create and become characters. I aim to tell stories to the best of my ability, whether it’s the writer’s story, the director’s, the producers’, the peoples’, or mine. Though I love the simplicity of entertainment, and people need to be entertained, I truly want to invoke emotion in others. I want to do this through the stories I am in and part of. I want to be in television. On long-running shows that detail a unique story with unique perspectives. The ones that people keep going back to, to relate to the characters and their journeys. I mean, did you see Chernobyl?? Holy wow, what a show, what a performance.
I approach each character I play with a huge piece of myself. I don’t want to be anything but genuine in my performance. To be honest, I pay less attention to my words and allow myself to be present, so I can make room for discovery and connection. Yes, I know I’ve gotten in trouble with the writers in the past. But my acting has been all the better for it.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Try not to spend your money eating at all the amazing eateries in LA! It’s hard, I know! They are literally everywhere, and everything is so damn good. Learn to cook instead.
Moonlighting is still a thing. It is sometimes hard to not be ashamed of yourself that you need to moonlight somewhere to make ends meet when all you want to do is create and make art. But believe in yourself, you will get there. Nothing to be ashamed of. If you are good with credit, it can be a lifesaver. But you have to know yourself a lot. Can you trust yourself not the spend it all? If you are organized enough, credit can save you from starvation.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Some of my best work has been in my acting class. My fellow classmates and my amazing teacher Cate Cohen have been privy to those performances. BUT I support every artist! Support me back by following me on Insta, or just keep up with me on my website, www.ruthfox.me.
