Lu, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I lose all sense of time when I’m creating, whether I’m behind the lens capturing the poetry of light in nature, delicately editing my photographs to evoke a feeling, or digitally painting to bring forth an abstract piece that speaks from somewhere deeper than words. In those moments, I follow color, form, and intuition rather than time. Lately, I’ve also found myself completely absorbed in learning how to paint with a palette knife, exploring texture in a more tactile, grounded way. Each creative process becomes a kind of meditation, a return to stillness, a rediscovery of joy, and a reconnection with the part of myself that feels most alive and free.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lu Ross, and I’m a fine art photographer and digital artist deeply inspired by the quiet beauty and healing presence of nature. My work explores both the representational and the abstract, sometimes revealing the serene stillness of a misty forest or the vivid vibrancy of a coastal sunset, and other times inviting the viewer into dreamlike, intimate landscapes through abstract compositions.
Through my art, I hope to create visual sanctuaries, windows into moments of peace, joy, and reflection. Each piece is an invitation to slow down, to breathe, and to reconnect with something greater than ourselves.
My brand, Lu Ross Photography, is more than a collection of images; it’s a journey into the soul of nature, guided by color, light, and emotion. Over the years, my work has been honored with exhibitions around the world, including:
• ArtExpo New York
• Latin Blood – Personal Structures at Palazzo Mora during the Venice Biennale, Italy
• Art Shopping at the Carrousel du Louvre, Paris, France
• Crocker Art Museum – Permanent Collection, California
• Wildling Museum of Art & Nature, California
• Desert Light Gallery – as Artist in Residence for the Mojave National Preserve
• Alice-Rice Gallery, Laguna Beach
• Art-A-Fair Fine Art Festival, Laguna Beach
• Art San Diego – Contemporary Art Show
• Quorum Art Gallery, Laguna Beach
• Dana Bay Gallery, Dana Point (current)
Ultimately, my work is about more than art; it’s about awakening wonder, encouraging presence, and honoring the quiet magic that surrounds us, if we just pause to look.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that profoundly shaped how I see the world was when I began learning about meditation and developed a deeper appreciation for the natural world around me. Around that same time, I stepped into my path as a professional nature photographer, and everything shifted. I began to truly understand that we are all connected by energy, and that nature itself is a living, breathing force that offers us love, peace, and joy when we slow down enough to receive it. Photography became more than an art form for me; it became a practice of presence, a way to listen deeply and reconnect with what matters. That awareness continues to shape not only how I create but how I live and move through the world each day.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I’ve been very fortunate to grow up surrounded by love. My mother, especially, was a pillar of strength and grace. She listened in a way that made me feel understood, always meeting me with kindness and grace. Her presence made me feel seen and safe, and her gentle advice helped shape the person I’ve become. As an adult, I continue to be deeply grateful for the love and support of my family and close friends. Their ability to truly listen, with open hearts and without judgment, reminds me of the kind of connection we all need: patient, present, and compassionate.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m deeply committed to preserving our shared humanity and renewing our connection with the natural world. Through my art, I strive to promote love, empathy, and the quiet joy of being present in nature. I believe that as we deepen our relationship with the earth and with all living things that share this planet, we awaken a deeper sense of empathy, reverence, and belonging. In doing so, we also return to the essence of what makes us human: our capacity to love, our capacity for compassion, understanding, and kindness. This is not a fleeting project; it’s a lifelong devotion. No matter how long it takes, I will continue to create work that encourages others to see the beauty in the world and the beauty within themselves.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
If immortality were real, I would build a utopia where every living person and every living being has what they need to experience this planet as a place of love, joy, and harmony. A world without war, envy, or destruction. A sanctuary free from fear and negativity, where love, kindness, and empathy guide our actions, and where nature is revered as the sacred heart of life. In this world, we would remember that we are all interconnected, and we would live in celebration of that truth.
