Colleen, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A common misconception in the creative industry is that collaborative work should always be free. Another is that people often overlook the true time commitment involved — it’s not just the hours spent on set, but the preparation, post-production, communication, and revisions that can take just as long, if not longer. On top of that, the cost of creative work is frequently misunderstood. From equipment and software to time, talent, and expertise, there’s real value behind every project that deserves fair compensation.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Colleen Winfough — a published Editorial Photographer, Filmmaker, and Actress based in Los Angeles. My work has a blend of digital and film and as of late I have gravitated more toward analog formats.
I am an animal lover and co-founded an organic dog treat company with my partner, merging our passion for wellness, creativity, and community. We’re currently gearing up for launch while I continue developing new photo and film projects.
At the heart of everything I do is a deep curiosity and a love for visual language that moves people — whether it’s behind the camera or in front of it.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My boyfriend, Chase Kyle. I truly have him to thank for being the major kindling to my initial fire for photography. On a daily he challenges me to expect nothing less than a 10/10 and also be willing to live a peaceful life. I have learnd to meet myself where I am each day because every day does look different.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
In the past three months, I made a commitment to stop making excuses. I’m submitting my best work—nothing less—and making the time to get things done, no matter what.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am currently working on completion of a film made with a very small budget and small team. We went out to a beautiful location in the Santa Clarita mountains and shot this film completely on film with my 814 Super 8 camera. I have since recieved the footage and it is in post-editing process.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I am with my dogs, my boyfriend, members of my immediate family and at the beach.
In no particular order. God is GREAT all the time.
