We recently had the chance to connect with COEN and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning COEN, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I am very excited to be back, thank you for having me! I believe that energy is the most important factor to me. Energy translates at a molecular level that affects every aspect of life; from how we treat the body, to evolving the mind and the feeding of the soul. The way in which we handle our own energy translates into our work, our relationships, and various experiences we involve ourselves in on a daily basis. When the root of one’s actions are authentic and true in purpose, everything else you touch becomes a part of your life and legacy; no matter the scale of how big or small said action is.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Coen, I am a recording artist/songwriter and creative based in Los Angeles, originally from San Jose, California. I write music within all genres, for various purposes (myself, other artists, television, film, ads, and more). Additionally, I run my own Substack blog, titled ‘COEN’S WORLD’, where I share original poetry, proses, and written excerpts based on my experience of life. I also include photography, curated music, updates on new/upcoming projects and personal stories from my life. What makes my brand unique and special is how I allow a story to be relayed through my energy and intuition; I am merely a humble guide to let it become the piece of art it was meant to be.
In my music, I draw from various sources including: my own life, the life of others, as well as dreams and stories collected over time. All of that material is then strung together to create a unique world of its own; meant to cater to that particular voice or capsule of time. As for ‘COEN’S WORLD’, larger subjects and themes are put into play to have myself see and think bigger. More importantly, for my readers who are on the journey with me to see life from the widest scope possible. The goal of both my music and Substack is to aid in understanding and enjoying life as best as we can. Currently, I have my weekly posts on Substack every Sunday at 9:30AM PST, along with writing music for my solo debut EP. Additionally, some new and exciting outside projects will be unveiled further into 2026. I had the pleasure recently of creative directing and being the main songwriter for ‘Butterfly Effect’, the deluxe EP by rising drag artist Shontelle Sparkles; the project is based on the theme of stepping into and owning your truest self, your purpose and individual power. Outside of these worlds, I am shooting content for my upcoming YouTube channel that is adjacent to my music and Substack material.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Living abroad for the first time really helped shape my view on the world. When I was in high school, I spent part of a summer in France and it was my first time leaving my home country. I went as an exchange student with other students in my French class, and I remember being so overwhelmed. I experienced so many new emotions, met many new people, and saw things that I only ever dreamt of seeing. Being a creative, I was quickly so enamored with French architecture, fine art, and most importantly, how incredible a cup of coffee was in Europe versus the US. From the most minor moments, to being engulfed by the likes of the Château de Versailles and the Champs-Élysées, I knew then there was more of the world that I wanted to experience from a young age.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain from myself by turning it into lyrical power. I started writing lyrics and songs in my later years of high school, shortly after experiencing so much heaviness than ever before. From falling in love for the first time, preparing to graduate and go to college, to leaving my family and friends for the first time to strike out on my own. Many firsts were happening all at once, and while it felt so divine, it was also too much to navigate without feeling safe letting out my fears and worries. Ultimately, I turned to music as my escape and path of relief. I wrote my first song in the dim hours of night, titled ‘nerves’; to this day I still have the original lyrics in an old composition book! Every once in a while, I read those words and melody notes to remind me of where I started and why I began. I remain very proud to this day I chose music to embrace my power as a creative to shape my world and widen my vision of it. That is a choice I will stand by for the rest of my life.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
When it comes to philosophies, I have a very mixed pool of practices. For my foundational practice, I credit ikigai for the way I live life; striving for balance and fulfilling my purpose at my own pace. Other practices include ‘hara hachi bu’, a Japanese eating philosophy that changed my relationship to food and how I eat, and the Four Agreements by Mexican author Don Miguel Ruiz. The combination of these practices help ensure to be and stay at my best possible on a daily basis.
As for a person I admire, I will always admire Aaliyah for her character. Though she has been gone for some time now, her music and sense of self I always found to be incredible. She seemed like someone who truly loved life, loved creating in various mediums (mostly as an actor and singer) and someone who showed love and respect to everyone. To this day, I still rewatch interviews and listen to her words on how to lead life as an honest human and a true creative.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a castle that could fly with the clouds in the sky. I always think about what it would be like to be up there, among the clouds where I could spend time closer to the moon. I have a lot of Cancer placements in my astrological chart (Cusp of Magic, Cancer rising, and my Venus is in Cancer), so naturally I have a very strong tie to the moon. The more time I spend with it, I find myself embracing the calm and the stillness of the world. With having a castle in the sky, I could then be even closer to a main source of inspiration and light, as well as welcome those that experience my art into it.
