Christina, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently purchased a young colt, his name is Arthur, and it’s so much fun to watch him figuring out how to horse.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Christina, owner and designer of Esmeraldadesigns which I founded while living in Del Mar, working in biotech.. Although I lived a few years on the East Coast while my daughter completed her education, esmeraldadesigns has always been a West Coast brand, capturing the spirit of the golden hills, the ocean and easy living. I uniquely focus on ecofriendly and fair trade materials, working long term with a handful of skilled artisans to source gemstones, recycle metals, CAD to solidify my drawings, carving, cast the rings and set stones etc. Currently I am working on a line of Joshua Tree jewelry!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a child I was convinced I would become a veterinarian. I’ve always loved animals and medicine and this was my big passion, to help animals. Somehow my grades never caught up with my dream, and though I spent many years harboring these dreams, other things like life, the cost of the education, and my growing motley crew of rescued animals always came between me and my dream. I have since realized that the direction my life took while I was busy not being a veterinarian is a direction i have come to love; designing beautiful rings and living surrounded by magical hounds and horses..
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of not being able to provide for my daughter prevented me from leaving workplaces and relationships that were not healthy.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, as someone wisely said; “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken”.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am doing exactly what I was born to do.
