Today we’d like to introduce you to Dilara Foscht
Hi Dilara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an internationally working actress and filmmaker, born and raised, one out of five kids, in Austria, Europe.
As an actress, I started my creative journey with dancing, competing successfully at both, national and international championships in the dance categories ballet, modern-, jazz-, acrobatic-, and musical- dance. After dancing had tickled my fancy, I hopped on the acting train, performing on stage, as well as on set in Austria and Germany. I started acting at the TaO youth-theater company in Graz, which lead me to being cast, as the lead, in my first theater production. Later, I studied Performing Arts in Germany until I relocated to Vancouver and. later to LA.
One of my most acclaimed theater productions, so far, has been Dorian Gray-Pictures of Beauty, which premiered in my hometown Graz. I was also cast for the German TV pilot I’m Awake, a leading role in the 13th season of the German TV show Das Supertalent, as well as appearing in several independent films. In 2020 I co-produced and directed my first short movie Eve.
Apart from acting, I love to write and produce my own stories, most commonly together with my identical twin sister Bianca Foscht,
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe that most creative fields come with numerous challenges, and it’s up to us to embrace them.
Particularly as an internationally working artist, there are many barriers to overcome—from learning new languages to understanding different cultures, and, of course, navigating the complexities of visa applications.
While these hurdles may be more daunting for non-native artists, I believe they also cultivate above-average determination and stamina. This unique perspective on “struggle” often leads to a deeper resilience and drive to succeed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
After transitioning from competitive dancing to acting, I knew I had found my true calling. While theater was my first love, I thoroughly enjoy exploring the various facets of storytelling. This passion eventually led me to film acting, the field where I have found the most success so far.
One project I am particularly proud of is an independently produced feature film, which my twin sister Bianca and I co-wrote and created. It was truly a passion project for us, and we poured our hearts into bringing it to life. Despite limited resources, we collaborated with an incredible cast and crew to pull off our freshman feature film—a project that remains a significant source of pride for me.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I firmly believe that a good mentor can have a profound impact on one’s creative journey. Mentors serve as guides and often as “door openers,” significantly shortening the learning curve. I was fortunate to connect early in my career with one of my dearest mentors, director/producer/cinematographer Michael Goi, and it has been a true blessing ever since. Frankly, I wouldn’t know where I’d be without his invaluable help and guidance!
