Today we’d like to introduce you to Sona Sedrakyan
Hi Sona, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an immigrant from Armenia who started her journey in floristry in my country 20 years ago. Floristry opened the doors to the wonderful world of beauty, inspiration and joy for me. 9 years ago I started sharing my knowledge with students coming to my floristry courses who successfully work in the profession or have their own shops in Armenia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia and Los Angeles. I started my journey in American floristry by completing courses at the American Institute of Floral Design AIFD. I continue to study, participate in seminars and symposiums. The recent succes is that my work took 2nd place at the world competition in honor of the 60th anniversary of AIFD(Marilyn Monroe portrait created with flowers based on Andy Warhol’s painting)It was team work done with awesome AY Flowers – most creative flower shop in LA. That’s how I move forward day after day, conquering new heights. I invite those who want to learn floristry, improve their knowledge to my courses, as well as those who want to open a flower business, I will be glad to take their first steps into this wonderful world of flowers with them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
the hardest thing for me was the language barrier, I understood that in order to be successful in my profession I have to learn English, I work hard and I hope to someday master this language (which is my third foreign language) perfectly
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Florist and Floral designer have different meaning ,so florist who even just sale flowers by bundle them , Floral Designer -person who create floral bouquets and arrangements, adding meaning and philosophy to each flower used. I am a creative artistic floral designer, which means I am create not only the daily compositions that you can find in flower shops, but individually assembled, thematic works taking into account the profession of the recipient and his hobby. That is why I also work in the company AY Flowers, which is famous for such works and puts creativity and development of the designer in the first place. I also love to create handmade cards with each order. For me, design is not only creating works from flowers, but using materials that are completely unsuitable for floristry at first glance to create something interesting and include them in my work.For example once I created a flower whose letals were made of fish scales and used it as an accent in my floral arrangement. All my students learn important thing “florist- designer can create masterpiece even from trush)))))”I really love nature and natural materials.I proud of my students and happy to see their success in floral industry. I love teaching process and quality of provided classes is my priority.
What are your plans for the future?
Opening a floral design school where there will be children’s groups in addition to regular courses is the most important goal in the near future. Children will be able to be closer to nature and learn to love it in this world of electronics and smartphones and, of course, create something interesting with their own hands. After all, we ourselves are God’s creations and we are also given the ability to create. Creator kids world will become kinder and happier and they will carry this beauty in themselves and in their future lives.So the first plan for the future opening of the school.I hope we will meet for another interview after the school opens and I will tell you about future plans
