Life & Work with Lakesia Rambo Barrett of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakesia Rambo Barrett

Hi LaKesia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
LaKesia Rambo-Barrett, originally from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1993, I moved to Los Angeles to chase a singing career. Things didn’t go as planned, so I went back to KC, but came back to LA in 2012, this time with a new focus. Fast forward, I’m now the First Lady of Do Right Christian Church, where my husband, Bishop Michael Barrett Jr., is the pastor.
During the pandemic, I turned my love for fashion into BuBoni Apparel (Black Unity Brings Our Nation Independence), starting with my own Kansas City Chiefs designs. I’m proud to say that I’m also the Founder/CEO of More Than A Trophy Foundation where we support women worldwide. I’m excited to announce that I will be speaking this year at a Women’s Conference in Dubai.
There’s so much of my journey to share! From acting in films like Beyond the Shield, written by my husband and streaming on Tubi, to singing gospel music—I’m always following my passions. And there’s so much more ahead!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been filled with roadblocks and detours. When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1993, I landed a demo deal with a major record company within weeks the A&R rep lost his job, and there went my deal. Shortly after I connected with the CEO of another big label, only to find myself valued more as one of his “trophies” than as a true artist. I faced plenty of highs and lows, including recording an entire album that was never released. Life kept throwing curveballs—having my first child at 31, then facing the devastating news that at the young age of four, she surfed a full blown stroke due to a an Astrocytoma Brain Tumor. Eight years later, I married my second child’s father, but we were divorced by the time she turned one. I packed up my life and moved back to L.A. with two kids, one with a disability, living on a Section 8 voucher. I’d left my job of 8 years with the Kansas City Housing Authority and to start over. A year later, I met the man of my dreams, now my husband, and together we rebuilt our lives from scratch. Realizing my worth, inspired me to start my foundation’ More Than A Trophy. Now, 12 years later, here I am, sharing my story in this incredible magazine!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I do depends on which role I’m stepping into at that moment. At home, I’m a wife and mother; at church, I’m the First Lady. In the office, I’m the CEO of More Than A Trophy Foundation and BuBoni Apparel.
I’m best known for being a prayer warrior, always ready to lift others up in prayer, no matter the season. With my signature blonde hair and bold fashion style, whether I’m at home, in church, or in the office, I get the job done.
My proudest roles include being a licensed minister, wife, biological mother of two, bonus mother of four daughters and five grandchildren. I also work with my husband at our company Kingdomtainment Media Group, where I serve as the Program Director. There’s truly no one else like me—I’m uniquely and wonderfully made by Jesus Christ. I’m an overcomer, a winner, and a survivor.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve got an incredible support team, starting with my husband, Bishop Michael Barrett Jr.—my life partner and best friend. My daughters and grandchildren keep me smiling and grounded, reminding me what it means to be a mom.My parents, Joann and Timothy Hughes, are right there when I need them most. My sister/cousin Tiffany and my Aunt Monique are a major part of my Village. Both are always there for me; they’re just a call away whenever I need help.
My big brother, Steve “Big City” Wimberly, handles production and management, making sure everything is on point. My Do Right Christian Church family is very supportive and has my backs. My mentor, Dr. Tina Lewis, pushes me to break out of my comfort zone, leading me to stages I never dreamed of while showing me how to do it all with style and grace. Helping me to embrace that I’m More Than A Trophy!
