Today we’d like to introduce you to Julissa Bermudez
Julissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and raised in Queens, NY. My career in the entertainment business began while attending Talent Unlimited High School in NYC. While there, I went on several auditions and landed a lead role in a Coca-Cola campaign which led to my first tv hosting role, “The Roof”: A Bilingual music-video show, shot live from Miami for Mun2 network. Then I became a co-host on BET’s “106 & Park” where I gained widespread recognition. From there I co-starred in “Empire Girls” a docu-series with Adrienne Bailon and have since filled multiple guest-starring and hosting roles. As I’ve matured in the industry, I’ve began two entrepreneurial endeavors. I created a travel/beauty show with my team which will debut in 2025 and, inspired by my Dominican heritage and love for the beauty industry, I created república skin. A brand celebrating all skin types and engineered to give you the Caribbean glow. The brand’s first product, a sugar body polish, is available online. I’ve been living in West Hollywood for 10 years since moving from the East Coast to continue my entertainment career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. As a Latina in the entertainment industry, I have dealt with unique pressures to stay authentic while balancing industry expectations and most of all the struggles of pivoting from traditional media to now social media and my entrepreneurial journey .
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mostly known for being a TV host. What I’m most proud of is creating república skin and being a brand founder and actively operating a beauty brand, while staying true to myself, culture and overall mission.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The biggest lesson is how fast society can shift and adaptability to those changes.
