Meet Shen Xu of London

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shen Xu

Hi Shen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Shen Xu.
I am a costume and textile designer with a strong academic background in the arts. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Costume Design from the University of the Arts London. This September, I completed my Master’s studies in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art, where I had the opportunity to engage deeply with various textile techniques and materials.
My education has equipped me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are essential for navigating today’s dynamic fashion landscape.
Driven by a passion for the art and design industry, I aim not only to pursue a career in fashion but also to explore other creative avenues that intersect with this field. The versatility inherent in design allows me to experiment across different mediums while maintaining a focus on aesthetics and functionality. In addition to my work as a garment designer, I have developed skills as an illustrator.
Previously, I operated an online store in China. I sold stickers, decorative items, accessories etc. This venture allowed me to merge digital artistry with tangible products while fostering connections with customers who appreciate unique designs.
Through this experience as an illustrator, I’ve built a social media presence boasting over 4k followers who actively engage with my artistic creations through likes, shares, and comments.
Currently embarking on a new journey as a knitwear designer presents exciting opportunities for growth within my professional portfolio. At present, I’m developing my own knitwear brand focused on creating high-quality knitted garments that blend comfort with style. Recently collaborating with influencers and models has enabled me to showcase knitted accessories designed by myself; these partnerships have provided valuable exposure not only for myself but also for each piece created under this initiative.
Looking ahead into future endeavors within this evolving landscape of fashion design—my plans include expanding my collection further by designing various types of accessories such as scarves, hats, bags that reflect both contemporary trends alongside timeless aesthetics rooted in traditional craftsmanship methods. As these developments unfold over time—I’m eager about what lies ahead regarding potential collaborations or exhibitions—and look forward enthusiastically toward sharing upcoming projects tailored specifically for those who appreciate innovative solutions within fashion’s ever-changing realm.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In terms of learning and personal growth, my journey has been quite smooth. I have a clear vision for my career path, which was shaped by my strong interest in the theatrical industry. This passion led me to choose Costume Design as my major. During my studies in costume design, I developed an interest in exploring textile techniques, prompting me to further pursue knowledge in textiles. Throughout this journey, the support from my family and friends has been invaluable. However, there are moments when I experience uncertainty about the future. While I aspire to collaborate with various theater productions as a costume designer, such opportunities can be scarce. In today’s competitive industry, there is no shortage of talented designers; thus, I often find myself questioning how to reach the heights of success that align with my dreams. To navigate these challenges effectively, I focus on continuously pushing forward—acquiring new skills and gaining insights into diverse cultural preferences regarding fashion and design. Currently, I am engaged in freelance work that offers flexibility in managing time while allowing me to explore different projects. If you are interested in collaboration or would like to discuss potential opportunities within costume design or related fields, please feel free to reach out.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my works, what I value most is the color combination and accuracy. The trendy colors of black, white, and gray are popular in the fashion industry, but they are not my style. I like rich colors, and even white or black, I try to make them be diverse.
In the work “The Garden of Solitary Enjoyment,” I spent a lot of time searching for the most suitable color combination in my mind. After countless attempts, I got this work. I enjoy the time of creating my own colors, and the yarns that can be purchased cannot bring me such creative passion. The remaining yarn will also be used in my subsequent works, and they are the footprints of my creative journey.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am not very good at networking,Fortunately, I have some friends who will guide me through it. They encourage me to take opportunities when they arise, and I appreciate their works and am grateful to have them as friends who guide me in the right direction. In terms of my work, my tutor, Celia Pym has helped me a lot. Whenever I feel stuck, she always finds a direction that’s right for me. The biggest benefit she has brought to me is helping me find my personal identity, which is very important for a designer.
