Rising Stars: Meet Josiah Mendoza of Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiah Mendoza

Hi Josiah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I fell in love with acting at 14, after a move from the Bay Area to Tracy, California, where the Geri Neylan Performing Arts Theatre helped me discover my passion. Each performance brought me closer to a dream I didn’t even know I had.

After high school, I followed that dream to New York, studying at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). The city itself became my teacher and offered a valuable perspective on how to approached my work, shaping me into the creator I am.

My first Off-Broadway role in A Christmas Carol confirmed I was on the right path. Now, back in California and living in LA, I’m continuing to chase my dreams, ready for what comes next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Navigating the industry as a Mexican American actor has been complex. I’ve found myself in rooms where I’m considered “just ethnic enough,” allowed access where others who appear more visibly tied to their heritage might not be. It’s a balancing act—being both American and ethnically diverse—but it highlights a deeper issue about representation. While I’m grateful for these opportunities, I can’t ignore the fact that many others, whose identities might be more forward, are overlooked. It’s a constant reminder of the work still needed to create space for everyone’s story, not just the ones that feel palatable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Storytelling is my passion, but when I’m not working on material, I work a full time job in an environment that keeps me fueled both financially and creatively. I dive into content creation on social media (@Josiahrmendoza) where I’m able to share my life and connect in real-time with others who see glimpses of themselves in my content. I’m most proud of building a life that my younger self would find mind-blowing. Having an elevated clean approach to my creations is my way of turn life’s struggles into human connection. Seeing the beauty in every moment, through my own tuned eye. Dating my art has created a new perspective on how I approach living through my work.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about LA is its light—the energy, the endless opportunities, and the feeling that anything is possible in this media capital. But with so much light, there’s inevitably a bit of darkness. The hustle can be overwhelming, and the city’s size can make it easy to feel lost. Still, that balance is what makes LA so magnetic, and I’m excited to be here, chasing dreams in a place where the possibilities are endless.
