Today we’d like to introduce you to Soleil
Hi Soleil, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In a way, Soleil Brows all started during my graduate program. I felt stifled by academia and I wanted an outlet to express my creativity. I then started working part-time as a makeup artist while also studying through a tattoo apprenticeship. I was spending so much time on creative ventures that did not guarantee long term financial stability. So when I earned my masters in communication studies, I focused on that career instead.
Flash forward to 2020, and the shutdown of the century. Similar to others, my priorities had changed. I had a toddler and a newborn baby who were unable to see grandparents out of fear of the unknown. That fear turned into regret as many of us saw the passing of our loved ones.
I no longer wanted to live in fear! I wanted to learn a skill and start an exciting new career that would reignite my creative passions. I coupled my experience as a makeup artist with my work as a tattoo apprentice to the new information I learned in my brow courses. So became: Soleil Brows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My youngest child was only three months old when I took my first brow tattooing course. Taking a single class is never enough. There are countless hours and thousands of dollars that go into developing a skill and a business. I first started taking clients from my house. This was not at all legal (!!!), but very crucial when first starting out.
I took another leap of faith and rented a room in a neighboring shop of Uptown Whittier. My boss and mentor at the time gave me so much support as I continued to grow as an artist.
It was difficult to take days away from my family to go into the shop each weekend, while also maintaining my full-time career. I thought I would never have another weekend off. Slowly, I was able to build up my clientele enough to make my own schedule while finding a work-life balance.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I offer semi-permanent brow tattoos for people with all skin and hair types. It’s inspiring to work with my clients to find which brow style works best for them. Among their choices, clients can decide on powder brows, microblading, and combination brows. Brow tattoos can range from natural and fluffy, to solid and sharp. I love the way that brow tattoos can enhance the appearance of a client’s face and bone structure. I specialize in powdery and pixelated brows which naturally fade overtime.
One of my newest passions is offering tiny tattoos. Tiny tattoos are typically fine-line, minimal designs meant to adorn the body.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I love to be able to grow and connect with my clients as I have the opportunity to meet people from all over LA. I’m currently located at Wildflower Beauty and Brows in the East Village Art’s District of Long Beach. My husband and I had our first apartment just a block away from my shop. This neighborhood is home to me!
