Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always loved marketing and entrepreneurship. Both my parents were entrepreneurs; they had many businesses ranging from photo studios to an engineering firm. Even as a little kid, I was included in their business conversations and they would ask for my input and advice. My elementary school notebooks were lined with doodles of logos and notes on business ideas. My first business was selling pet snails to my classmates in third grade (I painted their shells bright colors with nail polish).
As I got older, I found that the things I was passionate about fell into two very different categories. I loved analytical, academic things like calculus and data analysis. But, I also loved music, art, and writing. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college when I did an internship in marketing that I realized that marketing was the ideal career path to marry these two distinct skill sets.
As an undergraduate at Chapman University, I worked full-time as the Marketing Director for a lead generation agency, then as the eCommerce Director for an apparel company. I learned every area of online marketing from advertising to content development to social media and SEO. After graduating, I started picking up some freelance work, and loved the opportunity to work with a diversity of companies and help them grow.
My list of freelance clients grew quickly; I had to soon hire some people to help. Over time, we transitioned from a freelancer to an agency, and now have a team of marketing experts. The name Right Left Agency was inspired by the right and left hemispheres of the brain; marketing really is about the interplay between creative and analytical thinking. That is what we do best at Right Left Agency – we are numbers driven, but insanely creative.
Has it been a smooth road?
Scaling a business is hard, but it has been fun. I think the greatest challenge for many business owners is finding the right people. Our team right now is incredible; we have some wicked smart people who are crazy passionate about marketing. However, it took some time to find those people, and it is an ongoing challenge to find more.
Another challenge was learning what we are good at and sticking to it. It can be very tempting to take on every project that comes your way, especially as a young agency. However, we have learned what we are good at now, and that often means we have to turn business away!

I love that I can spend time in the beautiful outdoors. My favorite activities are hiking and going to the beach.
I hate the traffic. If I never had to drive anywhere again, I would be a happy camper.
