Today we’d like to introduce you to Marja Baker.
Marja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I loved taking pictures as a kid. I went to school got educated on the industry and decided to go into business for myself. I went to Cal State Dominguez Hills and got my BA degree in television arts (Minor in Digital Graphics) and interned at BET Networks in LA. It was there where I was introduced to different people and a world where I know I belonged.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some struggles along the way we’re negativity, lack of patience, lack of finances and just being discouraged. People don’t really understand what it’s like to be a CEO. Not just a CEO but a CEO that has a regular 9-5. It is very challenging. But my passion and my dreams continue to keep me going…
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Smiley Productionz is a company that produces music videos, produces sitcoms, writes scripts, creates webpages, offers video graphic services and photography services.
Smiley Productionz specializes in sports photography but our CEO Marja Baker is best known for the viral video Mom pranks son on 8th birthday on YouTube.
I am most proud of the sitcom which was written by Bobby Corbin and me. This was my first major solo project where I wrote, produced, edited and performed most of the post production duties.
What sets me apart from others is my drive and my work ethic. I’ve heard family and friends tell me all the time about how I work to much but this is what you do when you have a dream. All you think about is that dream. My dream is to run a successful business that specializes in creating, writing and producing quality projects for film and television distribution.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like your city is a good place for businesses like mine because Los Angeles and Hollywood are two of the biggest production and industry cities. Everyone wants to come to LA and Hollywood. The only con is there are so many people offering the same services so you have to be careful who you choose to work with.
If someone were just starting out I would tell them to work their social media accounts to help get them started first. After they got that started they should build up their clientele. Working out of LA or LA Country is not for the faint, it’s not easy but it builds character and it makes you a better business owner. I’m a firm believer that whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.
