Today we’d like to introduce you to Usama Douglah
Hi Usama, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
HBB’s DJing journey began in 2016 when Usama Douglah borrowed a mixer from a friend and started experimenting with it. I quickly discovered that I had a natural ear for music, and it felt like a perfect fit. Initially, I played at pregames and after-parties with friends, but as I honed my skills, I began to secure bookings for local shows in Los Angeles.
As I advanced in my DJing career, I realized that to truly grow, I needed to dive into music production as well. I started producing music a few years ago, but it wasn’t until 2023 that I committed to it more seriously. That year, I released my first singles under my brand HBB, “Don’t Walk Away” and “How I Knew,” followed by my EP, “I Set Your Funk.” These releases allowed me to express my creativity in new ways and helped me gain recognition among my peers in the LA music scene.
In 2024, I embraced new challenges by co-founding a record label called “Among Friends Records” with my close friends Hicham, Charbel, and Kameni, who are also DJs and producers. We share a vision to make a significant impact on the LA music scene by showcasing local talent. There are so many incredible artists in our area who often sign with labels outside of LA, and we saw an opportunity to be a local outlet for their music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any journey, the path to growth and success is rarely smooth. In the music industry, building and maintaining relationships is crucial, and it takes consistent effort to remind people that you’re active and engaged. Attending events and networking can be particularly challenging, especially while managing a full-time job, as I do. It requires not just time, but also the ability to be social and approachable. Ultimately, it’s a combination of hard work and fostering relationships that paves the way to success.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Known by the name HBB, I am both a music producer and DJ, and what started as a fun journey has turned into something truly rewarding. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time, especially while balancing a full-time job as a project manager in construction. In less than a year, I managed to release five tracks, launch a record label, and perform at larger shows.
What sets me apart from others is my creative mindset and my passion for a diverse range of music genres. This versatility allows me to blend different sounds, resulting in releases that defy traditional categorization. I believe that being open to various styles enhances my creativity.
I’m also driven by a sense of ambition and a desire for growth. I co-founded “Among Friends Records” to leave my mark on the music scene and to make a bigger impact. I strive for more than just small victories; I’m constantly looking for new challenges and opportunities to elevate my work.
Another thing that sets HBB apart is being blessed with incredible people in my life that are always supporting me and coming to my shows. Those relationships turned into professional as well when I met Hicham, Charbel and Kameni and co-founded “Among Friends Records”.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see the music industry continuing to evolve rapidly, especially with the rise of digital platforms, streaming, and social media reshaping how artists connect with their audiences. The line between genres will likely blur even more, leading to more experimental and hybrid sounds. I also expect an increased focus on independent labels and artists, giving them more control and creative freedom than ever before.
Technology will play a major role in this transformation, with advancements in AI, virtual reality, and immersive experiences changing how fans engage with music. But amidst all these changes, I believe the most important part is to enjoy the journey—learning, growing, meeting incredible artists and people, and evolving along the way. Ultimately, it’s about going with the flow, staying adaptable, and continuously pushing yourself to create and innovate.
