Check Out Gauri Goyal’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gauri Goyal

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Let me start off with a simple introduction: Hi. My name is Gauri Goyal and I am 23 years old. I was born and brought up in India. When it comes to my story, let’s work our way backwards…from now to where I think it began and back again.

I recently graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City with a major in Fashion Design. Surprisingly, it’s not something I saw myself doing three years ago. Three years ago I was living in India, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and Liberal Arts (which I have since completed), and it was during my undergraduate studies and the pandemic that I found my calling.

I was an art student in high school, and switching to a full academic college made me realize that I have a penchant and need to work with my hands; I enjoy seeing the tangibility of my work. Mind to Matter. From then on I started reconnecting with the creative side of myself, my daemon so to speak. I fell in love with poetry and writing, and on the same journey of understanding myself and what my future held for me, I found Fashion Design, a field inherently based in the physical world. Fashion Design allows me to breathe life into the ideas, visuals and concepts in my mind and I find that whole process fascinating.

Upon graduating from FIT, I have started working as a Design and Production Assistant at Bibhu Mohapatra, a New York City-based Couture and Ready-to-Wear Fashion House.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming from a social studies background, I constantly find myself doubting my good intentions for the world being in the fashion industry, but I truly know that this is what I’m meant to do because I can sit and work on a design for a whole day without getting up, without needing a break. I can’t do that in other aspects of life. How I choose to make a social impact, is a conscious decision I will take when and where I am able.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I work in Couture and Ready-to-Wear, and I am constantly learning about the creation of the most beautiful clothes. There is a lot that goes into the functionality of a gown or even a little black dress, and it is these technical aspects of garment construction I like to work with.

I would say I’m known for daydreaming ideas, concepts, and lifestyles. I like to believe that I have a good imagination but one that is still growing; like the universe, it is ever-expanding, it is infinite. I am all about a daydream I can execute, and you’d be surprised how realistic daydreams truly are once you put pen to paper.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That Ideas and inspiration are not born from nothing. They are a result of life.
