Daily Inspiration: Meet Joice Cheung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joice Cheung

Hi Joice, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was young, I found joy in observing the little things in life. This fascination led me to the University of the Arts London at Chelsea College, where I discovered my passion for creating installations that resonates with my love for nature’s subtleties. Returning to Hong Kong, I immersed myself in the fields of design and floral arrangement, which allowed me to blend creativity with practicality and equipped me a unique perspective on how art can intersect with everyday life. The transition of becoming an artist was a leap of faith. Each piece of work is a reflection of my journey and the myriad experiences that have shaped my artistic vision.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path of becoming an artist has been anything but smooth, in particular during market downtime, where emerging artists often struggle to find platforms to showcase their work, making it difficult to gain recognition. This lack of support requires a great deal of perseverance and self-belief. Despite these struggles, the journey has been rewarding. The challenges have pushed me to delve deeper into my artistic practice and each obstacle has reinforced my commitment to art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My artistic journey is deeply rooted in oil paintings, drawing inspiration from the natural world and the idea that “from little things, big things grow.” This philosophy embodies my belief in the transformative power of small, seemingly insignificant elements. My works exude a tenacious vitality, capturing the inner drive for continual transformation and growth.

Started Chinese painting at the age of five and graduated from the University of the Arts London, I have developed a distinctive style that merges Chinese calligraphy with Western abstraction. My work interweaves color, space, light, and movement, with intentional blank-leaving that symbolizes boundless possibilities. The calligraphic strokes in my paintings are more than lines; they are infused with energy and intention, representing the continuity of cultural inheritance.
