Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Beatriz Mathias De Oliveira
Hi Ana Beatriz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Ana and I’m a guitar player from Brazil! This year I reached the half of my Bachelor Degree Program here at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles.
I have been consuming music since day one of my life.
My first contact with the guitar was as a kid when one day, my uncle who is a musician was playing his acoustic guitar and decided to let me play it. I immediately felt in love with it. After that I started taking private lessons, playing a lot of ” Sertanejo” which is a Brazilian style of music and a lot of pop.
I did it for a while but always treating it as just a hobby. I never went deep on my practice and studies until I decided that I wanted to go to a music college.
I had to decide what I wanted to study after High School, so when the time came, I could only see myself being happy choosing music as my career path. After one year of perfecting my studies, I applied to the school that I’m at today!
Besides my academic life, I have been working on studio sessions, writing new music with people that I love and building my social media. It’s been a fun journey so far.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I has definitely not been a smooth road. At first it was hard for my parents to understand and accept that I wanted to study music. In Brazil the music education scenario is not that strong. Nowdays if someone wants to study music most of they will look for schools outside the country. So with all of that in mind, I figured that coming to the US was my opportunity to do what I love. Also being away from home, my family and friends, missing important dates can be hard sometimes, but in the end, being able to make music and study what I love makes it worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love working with acoustic recordings. I am mainly a folk/pop guitar player so I am very passionate about creating more fingerstyle and melody-focused ideas and incorporating them in my style. I also do a lot of work as a session studio musician. Being at a session and creating music with people who share the same passion for it as you is definitely one of my favorite parts of my job. I believe that being true to yourself and your own style is key to making great music and it makes you stand out much more, so I always keep that in mind when writing and playing with someone else.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have a lot of great memories of me playing the guitar and singing with my sister. Almost everyday we would get together to sing our favorite artists songs, just for fun, without really thinking about anything else.
