Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Sotelo Moreno
Hi Johnny , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Long story short, I come from a family of gardeners. They specialized in maintaining residential gardens. My summers consisted of pushing lawn mowers and scooping up leaf debris. Throughout my adolescent years and into my early 20’s, I devoted most of my time gaining construction experience. In California, you have to be a minimum of 23 years old to obtain a contractor’s license. I applied and obtained a license at 23 years old. I began renovating smaller yards and executing small scale projects. Through the years we’ve grown to be able to execute larger scale projects that consist of elaborate backyards including but not limited to pools, spas, concrete, and unique custom elements. Being a small business owner in construction, you become comfortable with failure. You learn lessons every day and you persevere to build another day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The company launched in the midst of a global pandemic. The construction industry experienced a boom like we’ve never seen before. The influx of sudden work challenged us early on to be able to keep up with demand. The road to what we are today was paved from the lessons we learned from this boom. Our dedication to provide exceptional service and quality craftsmanship did not fall short. We are grateful for the clients and experience we gained along the way.

SM Brothers Landscape offers execution of elaborate exterior projects. We specialize in the construction of custom high end residential projects. We generally collaborate with local designers and architects that specialize in developing thoughtful designs. SM Brothers Landscape believes designers should design and builders should build. Therefore, maintaining these symbiotic relationships have significantly contributed to our success.
How do you think about luck?
Zero. In the construction industry, you get hired for what you know and your ability to effectively manage and execute a construction project. It’s as simple as that. If you don’t put in the work, apply yourself to learn new things, and participate in networking events, you are limiting yourself from being a great contractor.
