Rising Stars: Meet Brandyn Baker of Los Angeles

Hi Brandyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
CityBoyz Givebacks began with a simple but powerful mission in 2020: to use extra Christmas money to make a difference in the lives of those struggling in the Los Angeles community. During that first holiday season, the team set a modest goal to feed 100 people on Christmas Eve. However, the overwhelming gratitude they received—and the clear need in their community—ignited a much larger vision. This moment marked the unofficial start of CityBoyz Givebacks, which officially became a nonprofit in 2022.

Since then, CityBoyz Givebacks has grown into a key player in the community, leading holiday-focused initiatives like food and clothing drives that have, over four years, served more than 2,500 people. As the organization prepares for its fifth annual event, CityBoyz Givebacks is expanding its efforts, not only with its Christmas outreach but by launching new programs. These include a Back 2 School Drive and an upcoming 5K Run/Walk, emphasizing support for youth and mental health awareness in the community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to building CityBoyz Givebacks has certainly come with its fair share of challenges, but we understand that we are walking a path familiar to many who have started from the ground up. As a new organization, one of the most significant hurdles has been the absence of a well-established foundational framework. Without that solid groundwork, it can be difficult for companies and organizations to fully buy into your vision or see the potential impact. This lack of a proven track record often makes it harder to earn trust, attract funding, and secure partnerships.

However, this challenge has only fueled our determination. We’ve embraced the need for perseverance, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. Every obstacle we face is seen as an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow. We’re not just building an organization; we’re laying a strong foundation that will support our vision for years to come. Each hurdle strengthens us and prepares us for a future where CityBoyz Givebacks can thrive and make a lasting impact on the community.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Outside of my work with CityBoyz Givebacks, I wear many different hats, each adding to the diverse experiences that shape who I am. I work as a Quality Assurance Analyst for a Beverage Distribution Company, where I ensure that processes and products meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency. In addition to that role, I serve as a referee for both high school and college football, a passion that keeps me engaged with sports at a grassroots level. I also take on a leadership role as a Senior Executive for California Greek Picnic, an organization that fosters community among D9 fraternity and sorority members.

I’m a firm believer in the power of technology to improve daily life, and I’m always on the lookout for innovative ways to integrate tech into everything I do, whether it’s for work, nonprofit endeavors, or personal projects. Efficiency and progress are my driving forces, and I love exploring new tools that can help streamline processes. When I’m not balancing these various responsibilities, you’ll often find me supporting my favorite local teams—the USC Trojans, Los Angeles Dodgers, or Los Angeles Clippers.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories has to be the moment I scored my first touchdown as a kid. I can still vividly recall the excitement and rush of adrenaline as I crossed the goal line, hearing the cheers from my teammates and the crowd. That moment was more than just a score—it was the spark that ignited my lifelong passion for football. Looking back, I realize that experience played a huge role in shaping my love for the game and my ongoing involvement in sports today, whether it’s as a fan, a referee, or just someone who appreciates the camaraderie and discipline that football brings.
