Check Out Justin Revoner’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Revoner

Justin , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, I had a stint as a child actor, landing a few roles—most notably in the iconic movie Friday. But barbering always had my heart. When I reached my teenage years, acting slowed down, but my love for barbering accelerated. I jumped into barber school shortly after graduating high school and haven’t looked back since.

Years passed, and I became pretty successful in a traditional barbershop, but I felt like I had reached a ceiling and needed to grow. Through some research, I discovered freelance work on sets for film and TV, and that’s when I began to pursue a career behind the camera as a barber/hairstylist. After a few years of hard work, I’m now a proud member of Local IATSE 706. My journey has taken me from in front of the camera trying to pursue acting, to the hum of everyday barbershops to the bright lights of film and TV sets behind the line, working with top brands and celebrities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road wasn’t always smooth. Balancing barber school full-time 8 hours a day, 5 days a week while hustling to pay rent for my first apartment wasn’t easy. I was determined to make a name for myself in an industry that had no idea who I was.

I juggled two full-time barber jobs while squeezing in time to complete cosmetology school because a cosmetology license was a requirement to join the union for film and tv. After grinding through the hours, I passed the state board test, earned my license, and was accepted as a member of IATSE Local 706.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im a barber with over 20 years of experience. Im known for my sharp lines and attention to detail. With each client I get to be creative and create a new masterpiece. In the barbershop, I’ve seen it all. I’ve built lasting relationships with clients from all walks of life, watching children grow into adults, and then bringing their own kids in for a fresh cut. I’ve been a part of their lives through the highs and lows, celebrating their triumphs and providing support during tough times. My passion for barbering is driven by these connections and the joy of transforming not just looks, but lives. What truly sets me apart is my versatility and adaptability. I’ve successfully transitioned from a traditional barbershop environment to the fast-paced, high-stakes world of film and TV, where every cut needs to be camera-ready. My ability to thrive in both settings, along with learning and growth, keeps me at the top of my game.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Master the basics of your craft. There’s no shortcut to success in this game. Skipping steps only leads to gaps in your foundation. You’ve got to put in the work, pay your dues, and earn your place.

Find someone who has qualities you admire or who’s already where you want to be. Don’t hesitate to just ask them how they got there. Some will be eager to help and others will hold back. Don’t let that stop you. Keep asking questions, keep knocking on doors until you find someone willing to share their knowledge. If I never asked questions, I would have never discovered that there’s a world for barbers beyond the shop.

Stay persistent, keep learning, and don’t ever stop moving forward.

Keep Going!!!
