Meet Jax Tobias of Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jax Tobias

Hi Jax, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an Emmy® Award-Winning Producer born and raised in New York. Throughout my 15 years in television, I have worked alongside high profile figures such as Oprah, First Lady Michelle Obama and Will Smith.

My career started in New York City as an intern for CBS at the Rachael Ray Show. I spent 10 years producing for Rachael and eventually relocated to Los Angeles to further pursue my dreams in the entertainment industry.

Throughout my years in LA, I’ve been fortunate enough to work for major networks such as Netflix, Hulu and Disney. My biggest accomplishment to date is producing the hit show Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith; where I earned an Emmy® win for Outstanding Talk Show, 3 Emmy® nominations, and 2 NAACP Image Award wins.

As a proud Latina, I have dedicated my career to helping share stories of marginalized communities and giving a voice to the voiceless. My life’s work is to inspire and educate the collective; and to ultimately change the world with positive content for future generations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout my journey, I have faced some medical complications that have deeply influenced who I am today. In 2004, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease; a chronic condition that attacks the autoimmune system. The years have been filled with many ups and downs; from major surgeries to being hospitalized for months at a time.

Stress is a huge contributing factor for those who suffer from Crohn’s Disease and my health was worsening at a high rate. My doctor’s advised that I should quit my job and leave television for good — because the stress of the industry was a leading factor in my debilitating health. I didn’t want to give up on my dreams but knew I needed to make a change to save my life.

I ultimately left New York City and relocated to Los Angeles in hopes to lead a healthier lifestyle. With a lot of hard work and healing, I am proud to share that my condition is currently in remission. I hope my journey inspires others to not give up and to pursue your dreams, no matter the circumstances.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a television producer. I specialize in unscripted programming, particularly shows that cover current events and sit down celebrity interviews. I am most known for my work at Red Table Talk which was the highest rated talk show of all time with over 1 billion views.

I am most proud of the work I did alongside First Lady Michelle Obama. In 2013, I was selected to produce an hour-long episode with The First Lady and Celebrity Chef Rachael Ray in Jackson, Mississippi. In collaboration with The White House’s “Let’s Move” campaign, with a goal to reduce childhood obesity rates, we produced a television special highlighting deserving kids and educators. It was a rewarding and unforgettable experience.

What sets me apart from others is my resilience and empathy. I have an older sister with severe special needs and she has taught me some of life’s most important lessons. Having a family member who is disabled brings unique challenges, however she shows me everyday the power of patience and kindness. I value my role as her sister over any other, and I believe having this dynamic in my family makes me a better producer.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My favorite part of Los Angeles is the community and the friendships I have found. I am active in my church and volunteer with organizations throughout the city. The Christian community in LA is beautiful and has become a huge source of strength and support for me. Living away from family can be difficult, so I am extremely grateful for the people I have found here. Since living in Los Angeles has always been a dream of mine, there isn’t much about our city that I dislike. I love everything about this place — sometimes even the traffic.
