Today we’d like to introduce you to Shambhavi Jha
Hi Shambhavi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in India, where my passion for storytelling and music guided me toward pursuing a BA in Hindustani Classical Music from Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi University. This foundational education not only deepened my love for the arts but also provided me with the skills to express emotions through music.
After completing my MA in Media and Communication from SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai, I began working in the Indian television industry. I gained valuable experience as a Sound Assistant on the daily soap “Divya Drishti,” which helped me understand the technical aspects of sound production.
Eager to broaden my horizons, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue an MFA in Filmmaking at the New York Film Academy. Here, I explored various facets of filmmaking, including writing, directing, and sound mixing. Over the past couple of years, I’ve worked on more than thirty short films in different capacities, from directing and scriptwriting to sound mixing and boom operation. My thesis film, Echoes of a Dream, reflects my journey as a storyteller, intertwining themes of passion, sacrifice, and resilience.
Throughout this journey, I’ve been fortunate to be recognized for my work, receiving a talent-based scholarship and getting interviewed by popular magazines like Canvas Rebel and Bold Journey. My experience spans pre-production, production, and post-production, and I’ve had the honor of working on award-winning projects.
Today, I’m focused on bringing my unique voice to the world of cinema, blending my roots in classical music with my experiences in filmmaking to create stories that resonate on a deep emotional level.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has definitely been challenging. Coming from a conservative family in a small town in India, I faced significant pressure to choose a more traditional career path. Breaking away from these expectations to pursue my passion for filmmaking was difficult, compounded by financial constraints and the cultural shift when I moved from India to Los Angeles.
Adapting to the fast-paced, competitive environment of the film industry in big cities like Mumbai and Los Angeles required a steep learning curve. Juggling multiple roles on set, dealing with rejection, and the uncertainty of freelance work were all part of the struggle.
However, these challenges taught me resilience and perseverance. They pushed me to refine my craft and stay true to my vision, turning obstacles into stepping stones toward my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a filmmaker specializing in sound mixing and directing. As a student at the New York Film Academy, I’ve worked on over thirty short films, with a focus on capturing high-quality sound as a mixer and boom operator. My passion for sound is rooted in my background in Hindustani classical music, which helps me create immersive soundscapes that enhance the storytelling.
I’m also proud of my work as a director, especially on my thesis film, Echoes of a Dream. What sets me apart is my ability to combine technical sound expertise with creative direction, making my projects stand out both visually and audibly.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is seeing a story come to life—whether it’s through the perfect sound mix that elevates a scene or the moment a film I’ve directed connects with an audience. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about taking an idea from its earliest stages and shaping it into a finished piece that resonates with others.
This happiness comes from knowing that I’m creating something meaningful, something that has the power to move people emotionally. It’s the culmination of all the hard work, creativity, and collaboration coming together to make an impact. Seeing that final product and knowing it has touched someone in the way I intended brings me a deep sense of joy and satisfaction.
