Meet Mitra Shahi of La Maison Interior Design in Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitra Shahi.

Mitra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career in Civil Engineering and after several esteemed accomplishments, I felt something lacking in terms of fulfillment. I decided that I wanted to move in a different direction and so I prepared myself and qualified to begin my NBA in law. Shortly before beginning the NBA program, I again had a gut feeling that ultimately this was not the career path I wanted to pursue. During that time, I began working with a rug company in Arizona called Rug Gallery where I had the opportunity to work with many Interior Designers. This is when I decided that Interior Design was ultimately the career that I wanted to pursue. I returned to school finally for an education in Interior Design and after getting my feet wet, I moved into the Construction Management space, which came very naturally given the combination of my background in Civil Engineering and design procurement. Many years later, you could say the rest is history!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started the company on my own and naturally, it has not been a smooth road. Relationships are the core driver behind our business and we all know that managing relationships can present ongoing challenges. I feel that I am lucky and I am so blessed in that my clients (80% if not 100%) are referral based. We end up working with clients, on average, from between a year and a half to two and a half years, depending on the project. I am delighted to say that I even have clients that have been with me for 9 years at this point. While not always smooth, the journey has been well worth it and the reward is the long-lasting relationships that have been built.

One of the challenges that I face on a regular basis is the reaction that I receive when I show up to construction job sites. I typically get a surprised and suspecting reaction due to the fact that I am not a strong and burly individual. Maybe partly because I am a woman, construction crews tend to underestimate me in the beginning but after a short time, the reaction softens and I see much more respect and appreciation from the workers once they get to know me which again boils down to relationships.

I consider all challenges as opportunity for greater accomplishment and within the last 2 years, we have been able to expand our business into the healthcare space. Anyone that works in the healthcare field will easily relate with how challenging this space can be and ground up construction for surgery centers is no exception. This recent expansion has kept us on our toes and keeps us excited as we grow our design services portfolio.
