Meet Joanna McFarland of HopSkipDrive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna McFarland.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The three of us that founded HopSkipDrive are all working moms. Between us, we have 8 kids that go to 5 different schools and about 20 different after-school activities. We were really struggling to make it all work and get everyone in the family where they needed to be while juggling multiple schedules. We created HopSkipDrive to solve our own problems as parents and to solve the needs of millions of other parents.

From the beginning, the question we asked ourselves was, what would it take for us to put our kids in a HopSkipDrive car? We built this from the start with safety in mind and safety is in the DNA of our company. It is the lens through which we make every decision.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every startup has a series of ups and downs. We’ve had many through this journey. At the beginning, it was very difficult for us to convince people that anyone would use a service like this, and now we have more demand than we can sometimes handle. Every day, it’s about moving through the high highs and low lows and remaining calm and focused on our goals.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HopSkipDrive – what should we know?
HopSkipDrive is a ride service for busy families that helps get kids where they need to go safely and dependably. We change families lives every day by relieving stress and freeing up the need to be in multiple places at once. We’ve helped parents get promotions and go back to work, and we’ve helped kids achieve great things by getting them to school, to sports practice, dance, karate, tutoring and more. We’ve also created a flexible income opportunity for many who caregivers who get to make money on their own time doing what they love.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My two co-founders, Carolyn and Janelle, our team, our investors and advisors have all played a huge part in getting us where we are today. The CareDrivers who drive on the HopSkipDrive platform are the backbone of the service we provide.
