Meet South LA Photographer: Jonarthur Leath

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonarthur Leath.

Jonarthur, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mother enjoyed photography and at an early age, I remember being her muse. As I got older my mother became victim to addiction and those experiences vanished. Many childhood memories that were captured were lost and my sister and I had minimal photographic representations of our childhood. Fast forward some years and I was an interior architecture student at Woodbury University in Burbank and we were required to take photos of sites that we would eventually design for. I fell in love with what the camera allowed me to capture. Ever since 2008, I have been capturing images. As of late a lot of my photography has been focused on sports photography, capturing my oldest son’s baseball travel ball experience. However, I am also fixated with urban space and human engagement within it.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to discovery has been a great experience. I believe that I have had to go outside of my comfort zones (I am rather quiet and observant) and move about around public space and capture moments in public space. I had often worried about how others would pass judgement on my while out and about photographing public space. In addition, I have had some photographic experiences capturing people in public and it too has challenged my place as well.

What role has luck had in your life and career?
I have seen no evidence of luck having a factor in my life. However, I do believe that our efforts in creating our future is taken into account by the cosmos.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I do believe that networking is key to anyone’s success. The greater the exposure the more opportunities will be provided.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best qualities about Los Angeles is also its worst quality. Los Angeles is extremely diverse. This city provides and extensive landscape that provides a variety of options when it comes to photographic opportunity. However, its diversity is also its curse. The Los Angeles basin is so large that unless you have a strong social network you can easily get overlooked.

Love his work! He has a great eye, can’t wait to hire him someday when life slows down a bit.
