Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Leng
Hi Sam, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
At that time, I had just graduated from college with a degree in medical laboratory science. After graduation, I was in a period of confusion because I realized I didn’t really like my major. One day, I decided to get a tattoo. I still remember how I felt when I saw my tattoo for the first time: I was amazed by the artist’s skill and artistry. Knowing that this tattoo would stay with me for the rest of my life made me very happy. In that moment, I decided to become a tattoo artist, hoping to bring that same feeling to others.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I started tattooing in 2015, during a period of transition between old and new tattooing techniques. At that time, we didn’t have iPads and had to hand-draw designs. Additionally, online information wasn’t as readily available. To become a tattoo artist, one had to go through traditional apprenticeship training. My mentor at the time wasn’t willing to share all the knowledge unreservedly, so I encountered many challenges and detours in both style and technique.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a tattoo artist in Los Angeles. My style is heavily inspired by Asian cultures, particularly Chinese and Japanese influences. My work often features traditional themes like florals and creatures, or a combination of both. I specialize in using planar lines to enhance the spatial feel of the overall design. What I am most proud of is my ability to incorporate these designs with the body’s natural structure to highlight the beauty of its lines.what sets me apart from other artists is my unique design styles.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Two years ago, I was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. After going through that challenging time, I came to a profound realization: while work is important, it is not the most important aspect of life. What truly matters is cherishing each day and savoring every moment of life. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue my passion for my career while also embracing life through activities like fitness, rock climbing, and other sports. This love and gratitude for life make me cherish every moment even more.
