Meet Aileen Medina of Woodland Hills, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aileen Medina

Hi Aileen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi my name is Aileen Medina! I have always had a huge love for all animals, especially dogs. I have been working with and assisting training dogs since I was about 14 years old. I have been lucky enough to get mentored from a young age, by multiple professional trainers, and I am continuing to learn new tips and techniques everyday while working with different breeds of dogs. I have been fortunate enough to attend training programs hosted by Cesar Milan. I volunteered to be an assistant in the Millan PACK project. It was an amazing program where students came to the Dog Psychology Center to help train local shelter pups that were later adopted out. I began my professional training career with going to Virginia to be certified by Trainer Nick White, owner of OffLeash K9 Training.
I have always found a way to be involved with dogs whether it was training my own dogs, going on pack walks, and working for a Dog Resort in college. I love getting to meet new dogs and help them live more enriched lives inside and outside of their homes.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a mostly smooth road. I have had alot of people doubt my potential as a young female latina trainer, I have been told more than once by clients, “if i can’t handle my dog, i’m not sure how you’re supposed to”. running my own business has also come with financial risk, ensuring i can keep a steady income, self employed, without any over head keeping me busy and fortunately have a majority of clients by word of mouth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a dog trainer who specializes in board & train programs and private sessions.
I’m most proud of being able to communicate to clients how they can have a better relationship with their dogs while understanding the fundamentals of training and being able to carry that on at home. I love being able to be the first and last trainer that families choose to welcome into their homes. Once I start to work with a family I ensure that they know i’ll be their trainer for the rest of their dogs life.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor, you need to find someone who you connect well with and agree with their style in whatever niche they offer.
For networking, i work in public in order for people to see my work in real life, like malls, big parks, farmers markets
