Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Hou
Hi Angela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sure! I’m now a director and multimedia visual artist based in LA. My interest in art began in high school, where I developed a love for painting and fashion. This passion led me to pursue professional education at various art schools. I attended Tsinghua University for my undergraduate studies, where I learned graphic design and discovered my passion for film and 3D art. Then I received an offer from the University of Southern California, so I came here two years ago to pursue my graduate degree, majoring in Animation & Digital Arts.
I have really enjoyed my journey along the way and love what I’m doing now. I’ve directed my own short film, collaborated with other filmmakers as a VFX artist, and worked on motion graphics and immersive design. I’m passionate about multimedia projects and constantly eager to do more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well…Overall, it’s been a comparatively smooth road for me. I was super lucky to reach my goals and achieve what I wanted at each step. However, there were definitely challenges and sacrifices.
One of the main challenges was adapting to different cultural environments. Moving from China to the US required me to adjust not only to a new educational system but also to a different way of life. This transition was exciting but also demanding, as I had to navigate language barriers and cultural differences while keeping up with a different academic schedule.
Another struggle is balancing diversity and specialization. As someone with diverse interests and experience in multiple media, I’m not like an expert in a specific field as some of my peers do. This can make it a bit difficult to fit myself into a defined role in the job market.
Despite these challenges, I believe they have shaped who I am and made me clear about what I want. My passion for art and storytelling has kept me motivated throughout the journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a director and visual artist passionate about multimedia storytelling. My work spans 3D motion graphics, visual effects, experimental film and immersive experience. I love integrating different kinds of media, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and aesthetics.
My diverse experiences across different media is my biggest strength and provides me a lot of inspiration. Understanding the rules and patterns of various media helps me get to the essence of storytelling, benefiting my work as a director. I really enjoy the role of director, which I liken to a military commander, as I love leading, planning, and seeing everything come together, whether on a film set, live show, performance, or exhibition.
I plan to explore more on the immersive experience design. I’m open to collaboration on live shows, projection mapping and VR/AR/MR projects.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
To me, when I first hear the word “risk,” my immediate reaction is, “I like it.” In my personal life, I have a few risky hobbies like freediving, hiking, and some extreme sports. I love these activities because they make me excited. However, I don’t see myself as an aggressive risk-taker; I have specific boundaries. I know my red lines and how to control.
I feel taking risks is about stepping out of one’s comfort zone to pursue opportunities that may have uncertain outcomes. Effective risk-takers often take calculated risks, where they assess potential outcomes, weigh the pros and cons, and make informed decisions. This minimizes the chance of negative consequences while maximizing potential benefits.
