Community Highlights: Meet Jenny Wang of SoCal Skin and Surgery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Wang

Hi Jenny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband and I grew up Chicago and met in college at the University of Chicago. Then, we moved to New York where I attended medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. My husband worked in finance, while I was completing medical school. After graduating, we moved to Sacramento for my dermatology residency training at University of California in Davis.

During residency, my husband and I discussed at length about combining his expertise in finance, and my medical training in dermatology, to open up a dermatology practice. Since our career paths were polar opposites, the idea of finally working together on a joint passion project seemed very appealing.

We also knew that we wanted to settle down in a community that was family-friendly for our growing family. I’ve always wanted to be a community physician, and take care of my neighbors, and have my kids grow up in the same community that I serve. We decided to come to Playa Vista one year ago, and fell in love with the neighborhood. As a new practice, every day is a learning opportunity, but it’s never dull!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road, but each detour has been a good learning opportunity! Our first big detour was the major construction delay on our clinic due to LA permitting delays. We were slated to start construction around September 2023, with a clinic start date of around November 2023. I was in the hospital about to give birth to my first, when we got an email informing us that construction was delayed until January 2024. Needless to say, I spent my first day postpartum on my hospital bed, applying to dermatology positions to bridge the gap. I ended up juggling clinic shifts at Kaiser, while getting our clinic up and running, which was definitely not what I was anticipating as a new mother!

The first 90 days of starting our clinic were quite the whirlwind. We would spend our days building furniture, setting up the clinic rooms, and visiting medical practices door-to-door to try and introduce ourselves. Now that we’ve been open for a few months, things are definitely picking up, but there will still be little bumps along the way! Just the other day, we had to install stronger AC units, now that LA summer is picking up.

As you know, we’re big fans of SoCal Skin and Surgery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are comprehensive dermatology practice based in Playa Vista, CA. We treat both children and adults, and we offer medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services. Some common medical conditions I treat include acne, melasma, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, hair/nail issues, new rashes, and skin cancers. Our cosmetic/elective services include lipoma or cyst removals, scar revision and acne scarring treatments, Botox, fillers, chemical peels, and laser rejuvenation treatments.

We pride ourselves in delivering excellent medical care, as well as excellent customer service. We know how frustrating it can be to spend hours trying to get a hold of your doctor, so we make sure our patients are always able to get their needs and concerns met in a timely manner.

How do you define success?
Honestly, for us, we just want to be part of a community where we can grow our family and business. Starting a family and a business at the exact same time has really tested us both mentally and emotionally. I think having a healthy balance of day to day joy while still being ambitious with our business.
