Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Avina
Hi Alejandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Health Coach turned Landscaping Contractor out of necessity and survival. When my dad was diagnosed with Cancer in 2019 the first month was full of shock then we went into survival mode he was the patriarch of the family and sole provider. I quickly took over out of necessity and started asking him how to run the maintenance business. He had everything in his head and I started collecting the data and managing his field crew.
After a year and a half of battling Cancer my dad passed away.
I was still between jobs as I helped my mother care for him and managed the business.
Jonathan, my husband, had been working for Dad for some years helping on the weekends with extras.
I ran the business on my own for about a year, but it needed a strong leader on the field.
After much discussion, prayer, and consideration, Jon decided to quit his construction job and run the business alongside me. We took a huge pay cut in this new endeavor. After a year in the maintenance route he decided we should obtain our C-27 Landscaping Contractors License at 9 months pregnant almost in labor I took the test and PASSED!
Jonathan has used his construction experience to expand the business from maintenance to landscape construction creating beautiful outdoor living spaces.
“Herencia” means “inheritance” in Spanish.
Jonathan and I are proud to carry on Dad’s legacy as your trustworthy landscape professionals and strive every day to go the extra mile – even when no one is looking.
We love the impact we are making for people and the connections we cultivate with beautiful landscapes and is surely making my father proud.
Even though it started out of survival, I have come to love and cherish landscaping. I’ve realized how much impact it had in my life and what it can do for others.
Landscaping and outdoor living remind me of my Dad.
He made everything look so easy and beautiful, and he had an eye for harmony and balance – he made things look nice. The times we shared as a family outdoors, in our yard, were precious and sweet. We would gather at all times – any excuse to be outdoors in the abundance of nature.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No records: My dad had an old outdated rolodex with his clients information. He had everything committed to memory. I had to collect checks as they came in to compile data and relied on the crew to help me collect everything and teach me how to go about daily business. I have learned how to become a business owner through trial by fire.
Jonathan, had to overcome the clients saying “Gabriel used to do this and that” and now we had to change things to be profitable.
As we moved into the Landscaping Construction we really learned systems, sales, marketing and communication. It has been a huge learning curve to become a business owner and i am grateful for mentors I have found along the way.
