Check Out Mr. `Flip’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mr. `Flip

Mr., we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I wrote my first rap with my cousin in The Bronx when I was twelve. He went on to get a record deal with Tommy Boy Records while I was living in Baltimore, but the project got shelved when Tommy Boy shut down. When I moved back up to The Bronx I was in a three man hip-hop group with my cousin and another friend. We eventually broke up without finding much success. I went on hiatus from music altogether for a long time and wasn’t sure I’d ever go back to it, but it came back to me. I had been living here in Los Angeles for a few years when I met legendary house music producer, Osunlade through mutual friends at a party. A couple of years had passed but music was still an after thought. Then COVID happened. Everything shut down. I got laid off. Then I totaled my car. I was sitting in my room kind of losing my mind a little bit when the idea came to me to start creating again. I texted Osunlade asking if he wanted to do an experiment creating hip-house records. He agreed to give it a shot. We released an EP called Osunlade Presents Mr. Flip in October of 2020, and the rest is history. Now I can’t stop even if I wanted to. The music is alive in me again. It never shuts off. My album, Next Level Shit, came out this year. I have so much more dope stuff coming too. I’m really excited to be on this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not a smooth road at all. The fact that we did a lot of work during COVID was definitely challenging. Traveling back and forth from Los Angeles to St. Louis, sometimes I’d be in the airport on lay overs for almost 24 hours. In 2022 I vacated my apartment, put everything in storage, and was in St. Louis for a few months creating my album. My job at the time was remote so I could do it but it was tough to just drop everything, especially giving up my apartment. However, in whatever it is you do sacrifices need to be made. You can’t be half way in. It’s all in or all out.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a songwriter and recording artist who makes hip-house records. Basically, it’s hip-hop vocals over house music beats. It’s kind of a lost genre. It started in Chicago back in the day and was really big for a while then it just disappeared. Obviously, as a rapper, I love hip-hop, I also love house music. I’ve always been in the New York club and rave scene since I was a teenager. When I decided to make music again I wanted to do what not a lot of others were doing. so I decided to combine my love for both and here we are. What sets me apart, at least what I am told by my peers, is my voice and my cadence, as well as my song writing ability. The choruses are what stand out. What I’m most proud of is that dancers from all over the world use my music for their Instagram dance videos. Everything for me has happened organically. I just had my first number one record on Traxsource. The song is called Cookin’ (Saison Remix). Still lots of work to be done.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Patience. Things don’t happen when you want them to happen. Things happen in their time when they are supposed to happen. This isn’t my plan. It’s God’s plan. So there’s a certain level of faith that you have to have. Most things are out of my control. All I can control is doing the very best work that I can during the creative process. Then it does what it does when it does it.
