Today we’d like to introduce you to KeVánn Jarman
Hi KeVánn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as a nursing assistant in an emergency room in North Carolina. I continued to work while obtaining my associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. After receiving my bachelor’s degree and continuing to work in the emergency room, I felt I was not being fulfilled. I wanted to serve my patients in a different capacity. So I decided to go back to school and obtain my Master’s degree and work as a family nurse practitioner. I am the only African American female nurse practitioner in one of the community emergency departments and also became the face of the hospital in my town (North Carolina). After receiving my degree, I fulfilled my childhood dream of acting. So, I enrolled in acting classes. I auditioned for a role as a doctor in the Christmas film “Another Christmas” and was offered a lead role. 3 years later I moved to California. I am now working as an FNP at Kaiser Permanente in the urgent care and San Feliz Urgent Care. Even with my career as an FNP, I am still able to fulfill my dream as an upcoming actress.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I struggled in high school with a learning disability but at the time, my parents were not privy to this diagnosis. It wasn’t until I was in grad school, that I was diagnosed with ADD(attention deficit disorder). Once finding the solution to this diagnosis, I was able to continue my journey in graduation grad school “Cum Laude.”
Also, this road/journey has not been smooth as an actress. I didn’t know how tough it was until I moved out here. Auditions are far and few between. My southern accent doesn’t help either(lol). But I am learning to be grateful for the auditions I do get and learning how to navigate my way through this entertainment business without being scammed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in an emergency room and 2 urgent cares. I am most known for being kind/courteous to my patients. They leave me the best Google and Yelp reviews. I am most proud that I am the only African American female nurse practitioner in my emergency room back home in NC. The biggest thing that sets me apart from others is my smile, the kindness that I show towards others, and my generosity. I am always willing to learn something new and in every place whether it be on set or in the ER/urgent care, I draw people. I wear a cloak of favor every where I go!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My parents have played a big role in my life. They were very supportive of my decision to move out here. My friend Amy, she also played a big role in helping me launch my acting career. She motivated me to do acting. My colleagues at ECU Health in Greenville, North Carolina and ECU Edgecombe in Tarboro, North Carolina supported me on this new journey as an actress. There were many shifts they covered for me to be on set. And I am truly appreciative of the outpouring love and support they continue to show me! I am forever grateful.
