Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Porterfield.
Hi Tyler, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Music has always fascinated me.
I began to dabble with the family piano to pick out my favorite tunes by ear from a young age. Growing up, played in a few rock bands and took lessons on various instruments. After studying music theory at college in Austin, I moved to Los Angeles to further my studies and launched an indie record label in Hollywood.
I combined my experience as an artist with some music industry education. That began to expand to incorporate several aspects, such as production, publishing, promotion, and more. The pandemic shifted my focus, and I was able to create some new content for my role as a singer-songwriter.
I began to manage other artists around the world. Live shows completely stopped and we needed another way to supplement our income. That eventually led to applying for a job as a talent agent booking at the Whisky A Go Go. A previous label residency and booking position at the Hotel Café previously had built a strong foundation for me in talent acquisition.
Currently working on my debut LP as an independent artist and curating/promoting showcases. Looking to set up a mini tour and plan on playing some shows around releases later this year. Excited to expand my network and grateful for all the people who have helped along the way!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a rocky, winding road.
Started from scratch without any connections in LA and funded an indie label out of pocket. I never felt prepared for all of my endeavors but rather have learned through experience along the way.
Overcoming obstacles in my personal life while running the business alone has proven to be quite a challenge. Above all, holding the art of music itself as the most important thing about what I do has proven to be most helpful.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pop Cautious?
Pop Cautious was originally launched as an independent record label and went on to expand into music production and booking/show promotion. The brand itself has been known for its DIY indie approach and for being a reputable independent boutique industry force.
The company has always put music first. As an artist myself, I believe that fostering a community that understands the power of music can create positive change in both the industry and throughout the world in general.
It’s been years in the making, but we are curating and organizing a series of charity compilation albums for various causes. This has opened the door to a variety of new genres and ultimately led to more onboarding. We have begun working with artists from around the world.
I have recently established ‘Pop Cautious Presents’ and am working to curate, book, and promote showcases featuring various artists in multiple genres.
I’ve been lucky to be able to work with some very talented artists. I am grateful for my role as a booking agent at the Whisky and for meeting so many awesome people along the way.
Managing artists and consulting with them on single/album releases is something I’ve always done and have naturally loved doing. It’s so rewarding to be able to help other artists grow. Have learned so much along the way through experience and am looking to branch out even more in time.
Currently working on a debut LP and aim to release a single from that project in the next few months. My last single release, “Love Like A Fool,” has constantly been growing since its release about a year ago. It was self-produced and shows what I’m capable of, not only as an indie artist but as a producer.
Finding that artists are more commonly seeking my direction as a producer. I’m proud of the songs I’ve produced thus far. It’s been cool to see a few of the artists I’ve worked with takeoff.
My goal is to align more with the TV/Film world and attain some licensing opportunities. It’s important to multiply income streams to generate a consistent flow of income from various resources for a sustainable future.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Expect the unexpected and love tremendously. Life is precious, and we should never take it for granted.
Adapting to changes and crisis management are vital skillsets for any entrepreneur. There is always a solution, and maybe more so in a forever-evolving industry such as music. Remembering why we do it sometimes is all we need to make it to the other side of something.
There is so much beauty and creativity that can be fostered when we as humans have a moment to stop the world as we know it and just be.
