Today we’d like to introduce you to Kateryna Sokolova
Hi Kateryna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began back in my early childhood when I learned to process my emotions through art. It doesn’t mean that I was any good at it, yet I always found the process of making very rewarding.
Later, as I was gaining my degree in Psychology I had to take an art class as an elective and the professor asked me if I want to become her teacher assistant for the term and I’ve agreed. During that semester I’ve got to see how others approach art making and some patterns emerged. It was easy to tell if he or she is a risk taker or a pragmatic one based on what and how fills the picture plane. Sometimes I even guessed their area of study. With background in psychology and art -art therapy became a natural path that opened up ahead.
I’ve graduated with double major in both art and psychology and short after got an internship in a day care facility for adults with mental disabilities to practice therapeutic effects of art making.
Constantly, I keep studying and learning new techniques, as well as I always apply my knowledge with different age groups and individuals. I’ve recently discovered a method called “the Neurographics” and it charmed me in so many ways!
The ultimate tool of accompaniment of your life goals and dreams. Neurographics offers 8 main algorithms to help your brain build new synapses and therefore, open up new windows of possibilities that might be invisible due to the shortsightedness of our habitual patterns of every day behavior.
Long story short, I’m here to show you a new way of breaking limits that stop you from becoming the self you desire and deserve being through the simple art making technique that requires no experience in art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road of becoming yet still continues, and it surely has not always been an easy one. However, I do what I absolutely love and believe in. I see the results of my work and it is the biggest motivation the one can ask for.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What makes me proud is a diversity of people who seek my expertise in art therapy. From achieving developmental goals with very young children and supporting the cognitive functioning in elders, to establishing corporate team building through the art making, to private parties and events.
I always find a unique approach to every group and individual to make the practice fun and comfortable.
Also, I take pride in the set up of the practice. I want it to feel festive rather than academic. I facilitate the environment in the way that the participants never run short on the creative supply and inspiration.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Rick Rubin wrote an amazing book on creativity which I think is essential for everyone to take a glimpse at some of its pages. “The Creative act: a way of being” is a manual to the creativity awakening. The book is easily written and has a pretty cover to become your coffee table favorite staple.
“Think Again” by Adam Grant made me rethink many things I took for a fact. It depicts some vivid examples of how important is to change your mind to achieve new heights. It talks how If you want to have something that you’ve never had it’s time to do something you’ve never done.
Vilém Flusser has gifted us with a book that has became my all-time favorite. “The Shape of Things” elaborates on the idea that the conscious approach toward design helps to elevate the quality of one’s culture and therefore- life itself. “Design is also destiny, and such a definition is an attempt to take our own destiny into our own hands, to give it shape” says Vilém in his book. I’d highly recommend to add this book to your list.
