Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Harrison
Hi Steven, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up breathing music and comedy. I started watching the Marx Brothers, Chris Farley and other physical comedy first then as I aged gravitated towards stand up. I was mesmerized by how Pryor commanded the stage or how Robin Williams made it look effortless entertaining others randomly. He was truly a machine gun of comedy.
At age twelve when I first watched “Chappelle Show” I didn’t realize you could do a comedy show with musical guests involved somehow. Things like “The Who” blowing up a bass drum on “The Smothers Brothers” also captured my attention fully. As a drummer and singer, I knew immediately I wanted to do that as well.
Podcasts kept developing over time and with radio taking a backseat, it made sense to do this in place. I always thought I could be a good DJ. By this time it was a different era than 2005 so it just hit me: start an entertainment company & Youtube account. It was a way to offer all of my ideas to others under one umbrella. Being an entertainer also provides opportunities to travel (which is the part my girlfriend enjoys most as long as she can go).
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been open about my sobriety which I have been for almost three years. I have been through some darkness and grew up in a small town. It’s exactly like that John Mellencamp song in regards to the little opportunity part, especially for entertainment. If I could tell my younger self anything as far as entertainment goes it would be to write my own story, not wait around for the right thing. I would also say take even more chances but prepare for your future too. Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket, cliche as that is.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I don’t know of anyone who offers the type of angle I take with entertainment. At least when it comes to variety at all levels I feature numerous types to offer you. Sure people have done musical shows, people have conquered talk shows and incorporated stand up into them but mine goes deeper than that. I feature the the open mic comic, the aspiring theater geeks, the gritty punk rock kid who feels ambushed by a corporate world and doesn’t feel there’s an outlet to say “this is ridiculous”. I also don’t just interview you. I want to hear about your progress, your struggles, your new job or girlfriend and whatever else you face in life. My world is yours. Every story is a different story so i’ll tell it if nobody else will.
What does success mean to you?
Success is simply defined. If you do not cut corners and feel you are dedicated to that thing you love and care for fully, you are successful. It’s running sprints after practicing all day as an athlete. It’s sprinting across a city to do a second or third mic as a struggling comedian just at the off chance you get some recognition but maybe don’t. You bet on yourself. You care, even if nobody is watching.
