Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyly Hoang
Hi Lyly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I would say I lead a somewhat normal, somewhat interesting, somewhat genre-defining life like everyone else. However, I think one thing that sets me apart is that I grew up with a growing desire to vocalize all there is about life. I am curious about everyone and everything – bits of information here and there make me appreciate the earth we walk on every day. An older woman’s romantic adventures back in the 40s. A 20-something model trying to make it big in LA. An intensely curated reading list of a veteran director. An artist’s journey through corporate Hollywood. Despite living through many struggles myself as a foreigner pursuing higher education in the unpredictable American landscape, I still find all the bad and good profoundly poetic. It’s fun to talk about it. It’s fun to draw it. I became a film writer and creator simply because I want to appreciate these little things, which is where I am now, in sunshine California, thousands of miles away from home.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
An exhaustive list. Many things have been an uphill battle, and I am deeply grateful for any help I get along the way. I admire everyone who went through the paperwork and the stress of a weaker passport because having to deal with all of that by myself since 8th grade was just humorously difficult! And it took me years to play catch up with American culture, values, and people, and that was no easy game.
Outside of school, I try to travel a lot, too. However, every time I leave, a bit of me stays behind. To come to America, I had to leave my friends, my family, my language, my culture back in Vietnam. I’m sure many could relate to this – feeling like the “me” is fragmented. Those fragments of “me” go into hibernation or worse, forgotten if it is not paid attention to. It happens in all the “lives” I’ve lived in any country, and it is sobering. Creating art helps me remember – and being able to preserve those past moments helps me overcome that challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create good cheeky little stories with anything – scripts, short stories, short animated films, storyboards, comics, paintings, etc. I’m actually not sure what I am known for, because I do so many things. Some people know me as an artist, some know me as a writer. I enjoy everything, though, and if there is ever a fun fascinating production, you might find traces of me there.
I don’t really mind what label I have as an artist. You saw my work, you were intrigued, perhaps had enjoyed it, perhaps remember it, I’m a happy artist.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am open to collaboration and work – you can find me on all socials @zaccr.9, or shoot me an email through [email protected]. We could make cool stuff together!
