Rising Stars: Meet Xinyi Ma

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Xinyi Ma.

Xinyi Ma

Hi Xinyi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In the beginning, I was passionate about Fashion Design. Later on, when I was watching a documentary, I saw Paula Scher doing the artwork. She is a very good typographic designer, and her posters are powerful.

The documentary shows all her artwork and the way she gets ideas to design her artwork. That really influenced me. I decided to study graphic design. At the same time, I decided to go to the Art Center and become a graphic designer.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is not a smooth road for me. I was learning fashion design first, so I needed to learn the software that graphic designers use again.

Also, I found that most of my college classmates are very professional in graphic design, so I have used this chance to learn and keep challenging myself. Most of the time, if the professor asks for one version of the design, I will design two to three versions to show in the class. More is better than less.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in branding (I really like to play with form and type) and package design (I stay with using eco-friendly materials to design the package).

I like to collect exquisite artwork and package designs to become my inspiration. I am very proud of challenging myself with different design styles and pushing the limits of my creativity.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think most people don’t know that I like to collect different types of packages (because different materials have different knowledge of them).

This helps me to keep most of my package designs with eco-friendly materials. Also, I like to smell the new book paper because the paper has a different fragrance.
