Today we’d like to introduce you to Caijing Kuang
Hi Caijing, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t study art as an undergraduate and I took a year gap after university before applying to a postgraduate illustration course in the UK.Whilst studying at Kingston University I was introduced to printmaking on a deeper level, which has shaped the style of my drawings since. Now I’m an illustrator exploring more narrative possibilities in my illustrations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Crossing industries is not easy.I didn’t have a background in studying art professionally before, and the gradual transition into art took me a long time. When I was making prints, I found that one characteristic of monoprints is that they can’t be engraved with small details like hand drawings, to solve this problem, I cut and collage them to add more layers to the picture.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an illustrator as well as a printmaker. Many of my projects interrogate memories and personal experiences, and I like to incorporate emotions into my prints. The mottled texture of a monoprint fits the theme of “memory” and “spirituality” and amplifies the personal emotion of the image.I also like to find a balance between abstraction and figuration, using clues in the image to guide the reader through the narrative while leaving room for the reader’s imagination.
What makes you happy?
For me I enjoy the sunshine, peaceful summer breezes, greenery and flowers and good food, but more importantly I enjoy inner peace with people close to me.In the past I used to create art to vent and interrogate my inner emotions, art was used as a tool to heal my trauma.
Now I can finally start to enjoy the small, peaceful moments in my life, and through the accumulation of these tiny elements, which can also generate great energy, I am able to create art that is more relaxing and liberating.
