Community Highlights: Meet Bessy Centeno of Bessy’s Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bessy Centeno

Hi Bessy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Bessy Centeno, the owner of Bessy’s Boutique, a local shop in Pasadena, CA. Since 2001, we have been family-owned, women-operated, and God-led. As an immigrant woman from Honduras, I’ve faced numerous challenges and moments of discouragement. However, my perseverance and the support of my children have kept me going.

In the early days, I sold items from my car, going door-to-door and visiting salons—anywhere I saw potential customers. I have always been meticulous about how I present my products and treat my customers. Even when selling from my car, I ensured that each customer received the attention, respect, and dedication they deserved. Additionally, I have always been committed to sourcing quality items.

My dedication quickly attracted a loyal customer base, many of whom still shop with us today. At the time, I made a significant impact by selling gold jewelry, which was in high demand. My ability to source it at competitive prices allowed me to stand out. I learned that building relationships, being honorable, and maintaining clear communication were crucial to gaining trust, both with clients and in the business world. These three qualities have been instrumental to my success.

With the growing customer base, I was able to save enough to open my shop. Since opening, Bessy’s Boutique has become a second home for my family, and the people who have joined me on this journey feel like extended family. I am incredibly blessed to do what I love and don’t take it for granted.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My experience has been anything but smooth. Being a single mother, an immigrant with limited resources, and a business owner has been a challenging journey. Balancing all of this was daunting, but I never considered giving up. Too many people depended on me—my children, my family back in Honduras, and the loyal customers I had gained. I didn’t have the luxury to quit.

I wasn’t afforded many opportunities in life, and being the first in my family to achieve so much came with even bigger challenges. I’ve faced countless failures, pain, and moments of doubt. But I always believed in pushing through, knowing that things would eventually get better if i just gave it my all.

The secret is to take everything step by step.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Bessy’s Boutique may seem like just a store where people can find beautiful, unique items to complete any look, but for me and my family, it symbolizes so much more. This boutique has been a gateway to incredible opportunities and a better life. My children have grown and excelled in their fields, inspired by the example of me pursuing my dream. Additionally, this boutique has provided vital support to our family back in Honduras.

To us, Bessy’s Boutique is a little piece of heaven on earth, and we hold it dear to our hearts. It’s not merely a business; it is the heartbeat of our lives. Our recent focus has been on community engagement, empowering women to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams. We’ve opened our space to other women business owners, giving them a platform to showcase their products and thrive.

What sets Bessy’s Boutique apart is our unwavering commitment to community and the transformative power this boutique has had on our lives. We aim to share the love, security, and sense of belonging that Bessy’s Boutique has given us. Our aspiration is to create a nurturing and inspiring environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

We want our customers to leave with more than just unique and beautiful items. We hope they take away a feeling of empowerment, a sense of connection, and the inspiration to chase their own dreams.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, we learned a great deal from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our genuine love for our boutique has been the foundation of our resilience during such a challenging time. The unwavering support of my children also played a crucial role in helping us navigate through the uncertainties.

It was a scary time for all business owners, but I had faith that once we were able to reopen, things would be different—not in a way that would force us to close, but in a way that would strengthen our bond with the amazing community that continues to show up for us and support us daily.

The pandemic reinforced the importance of adaptability and community. We realized that our boutique is more than just a place to shop; it’s a beloved part of our community. The loyalty and love from our customers have been truly heartwarming and essential to our survival and success.
