Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Arellano.
Hi Javier, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
So, my career really began at 16. My mom used to ask me to help her get ready, and it became sort of like a time for bonding. Then I realized that I really enjoyed everything about the beauty industry, growing up in the heyday of Pat McGrath/John Galliano/Orlando Pita was a magical time for fashion and beauty. Since then, I have had an unquenchable passion for the art and creativity of beauty, after enrolling and having a transformative experience in beauty school, I was ready to take the leap into Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the pandemic happened, and I lost my mother to breast cancer; I took some time off to heal and reflect in Seattle for a bit. I then relocated back to California and off to Los Angeles I went, spending early mornings and late nights on the Metrolink to keep the ball rolling. After several years of assisting with the most talented and inspiring artists in Beverly Hills, I am now ready to branch out on my own and begin my journey. I’ve been fortunate to have worked backstage at fashion shows, film sets, and even pageants, and seeing the final results come together makes it all worth the hard work and struggle. And it’s only the beginning, someday I’d love to work alongside Pat McGrath and make beautiful art for NY/Paris/Milan fashion weeks and creating inspirational editorials and timeless beauty moments in film and music!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh honey, I wish! Being on the spectrum can make it difficult to navigate this extremely social industry. Hyperfixation and crippling self-doubt can also lead to some interesting situations. However, you simply must keep growing and pushing yourself to be the best version of yourself you can be. Always keep going, never give up, no matter what obstacles arise.
Also, if you want to be in film, you have to be in Los Angeles, no questions, so one must do what they have to make it happen. For years, I would wake up at 4 am, leave my house in riverside by 5, to make it to the train station by 630 to head to get to union station by 8 so I could make it to work in Beverly Hills by 9/10 am, depending on the day. Then do it all in reverse after working a full shift, rinse, and repeat. But as I said earlier, one must do what one must do to make it work, and that’s that.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in hair color and hairstyling; I am a Sassoon-trained hairdresser as well. Years of assisting has helped perfect my blowout technique and that’s definitely something I’m very proud of, it didn’t happen overnight unfortunately, but staying dedicated to my craft ensured a solid foundation to grow from. What sets me apart from others is my tenacity, resilience, and problem solving because to me, it’s not about being the best, it’s about finding beauty and inspiration in everything I do or see that really helps feed my creativity.
What do you think about happiness?
A lot makes me happy, from a cool breeze on a hot day, seeing dogs walk around the city in little booties, to even the glow a client has when they really, really love their hair. As long as my senses are pleasantly stimulated, I’m happy. It’s always best to stay positive and optimistic; no matter how tough things get in life, it’s the only thing that will keep you afloat.
