Today we’d like to introduce you to Flor Delis Alicea.
Hi Flor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, and my love for arts started in my family gatherings. I come from a very big and artistic family; our parties were like a talent show. My grandpa used to write songs, and all my uncles and aunts either sang, played an instrument, or did poetry. When I do art, I definitely feel closer to home. I grew up as a dancer; I was in a kid’s salsa company called Rumba Brava from Julie Mayoral Dance Academy. I kept dancing and training till I went to college, where I was also part of my college dance Team and competed representing the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. While I was doing a bachelor’s degree in science, acting always found a way to find me. I started doing commercials and taking acting lessons on the weekends. When I finished my degree in 2020, I decided to audition for an acting school in the US and pursue what I really wanted for so long, which was acting. Now I’m here living in Los Angeles and shooting my first feature film.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has been a challenging process. I moved here in the middle of a pandemic, leaving my country, starting from zero and having no connections. Two years later I graduated from acting I got my agency and my managers and started auditioning. I started getting so much good feedback and callbacks, but then the strike happened. I feel that one of the biggest struggles along the way is the lack of Latino/a representation in Hollywood, the opportunities for us to tell our stories and been able to portray characters where we can use our own accent. Even though there have been many obstacles, I’ve been blessed with the people I’ve found along the way, and the team I have right now is helping me day by day to make it happen.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an actress and dancer. I’m definitely proud of everything I’ve been able to achieve since I got here. I think discipline, persistence, consistency, and hard work have definitely helped me throughout this journey.
