Meet Will Reardon of DryJect Southwest in Huntington Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Reardon.

Will, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My turfgrass voyage began over 20 years ago when I was following behind my father with my Fisher Price lawn mower and using Matchbox cars to stripe our green carpets in the dining room with checker-board patterns just like MLB stadiums.

The journey matured into a college degree in Plant Science: Horticulture and turfgrass and eventually brought me to Southern CA where I now own/operate DryJect Southwest.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has had many challenges, skinned knuckles and long work days. But it doesn’t feel like a struggle, it feels like part of my identity.

DryJect Southwest – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
DryJect Southwest offers aeration for golf courses, athletic fields, and even common landscape areas. DryJect is a one-of-a-kind aeration process that has the ability to inject high volumes of dry materials into the turfgrass rootzone.

Aeration is a crucial process that all high-end grass growers must employ. Aeration allows the turfgrass plant to thrive. Pore space within the soil is a necessity. Oxygen and water alike must be able to infiltrate into the rootzone in order for the turfgrass plant to grow and perform properly for applications like golf course putting greens and sports fields.

DryJect holds a very unique niche in the golf course putting green market. DryJect has service contractors through-out the world. More than half of the Golf Digest Top 100 courses in the US employ DryJect aeration on their putting greens.

We have the ability to use high pressure water to blast tiny holes into the putting green surface. Dry materials (i.e. sand) immediately follow the water blast to fill the voids. Within hours of clean-up, the putting surface is smooth and firm, allowing the golfers to continue play with very little disturbance.

“Little disturbance” is key for our customers, these putting greens are their cash cows. With alternative forms of aeration, the golf course is forced to close-down completely, or to offer significant discounts on their greens fees. This will ultimately hit their cash register with less cash flow!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It has been very exciting for me to become a business owner at the age of 28. Other highlights of my career include working on the groundscrew at Fenway Park in Boston, MA and being the head groundskeeper for minor league baseball teams.
