Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Plaksin.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Upon graduation from Syracuse University, I was lucky enough to have been chosen by Saks Fifth Avenue to be one of less than a dozen trainees to be part of their buyer training program. This gave me the basis for my career, as I gained an understanding of retail, product, fashion, sales, marketing, and finance. From introducing men’s European clothing to the market to running the second-largest men’s furnishing and clothing department in the chain in Beverly Hills, I learned it all.
I wrote the training program on how to sell Atari Home Computers because of my retail background. I spent years as the Vice President of Sales for Packard Bell. Launching home computers into the mass market. Selling over 3 billion a year in computers and being the first person ever to sell over $1 million dollars in an hour on QVC.
Working in the Flash & DRAM memory business, I was able to create new channels of business in the retail and OEM marketplace. Generating several billion in memory sales. Launched the Sesame Street Character Memory line (Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Kermit & Abby Cadabby) which included a full Sesame Street movie. The Tough Drive is a best-selling memory for the Army Airforce Exchange Services. Also created the “Susan G. Komen” Pink Petito drive and donated over $250K to the research to end breast cancer.
Was noted as the first person in Motorola to maintain the largest number of items with Best Buy on their retail floor, helping to generate over a billion in sales for the company. Created the most successful internal launch video for a new line modem product launch.
But perhaps the most exciting program and company that I have worked for is AX. Starting as the Vice President of Sales & Marketing and now serving as the President and CEO of Alchera X, it has been an honor and an opportunity to sell an artificial intelligent (AI) Saas (Software as a Service) that detects and protects property and lives by detecting fires and notifying first alert respondents anywhere from 20 minutes to over 2 hours before a 911 call or other notification.
Working with public utility companies and business that use our technology to help mitigate wildfires in a global basis is perhaps one of the most important positions that I have held. I have the chance on a daily basis to cooperate and work closely with people who are trying to save lives and property by mitigating fires before they burn hundreds or thousands of acres.
AX is ready to usher in a new era of safety and security by revolutionizing wildfire detection and mitigation solutions. Their groundbreaking FireScout AI combined with the only EPA-approved chemical solution, pioneering a safer, more effective fire-retardant dispersal process, is just the beginning of the newly launched Wildfire Risk Reduction Program, offering a more comprehensive way to address wildfire mitigation in an ever-changing, more critically threatening environment.
AX has had several honors including:
- -Hosting the Korean Delegation from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety visiting the US to strengthen global wildfire management.
- -AX has been specially invited by the California Governor’s Office to attend the International Forum and Reception for the Australian Ambassador to the US.
- -In an effort to contain wildfires, we have partnered with RAIN and SIKORSKY in a flight test on Black Hawk helicopters integrating early detection cameras using FireScout AI.
- -AX has been selected as 1 of 6 participants to represent the State of California by the California Governor’s Office in one of the largest Sustainability Conferences, Hannover Messe 2024, in Germany later this month.
- -AX is currently working with the US Embassy in European nations to support business development efforts on behalf of the US Dept of Commerce and the International Trade Administration.
- -Last but most certainly not least, Alchera our parent company, Alchera, provides AI-based security for the Incheon Airport in South Korea, now the 3rd the 4th busiest in the world, alongside with several European Airports to develop potential expansion efforts and safeguard people and lives.
The company also is one of the top 10 developers of facial recognition software. We are planning safety and security programs that will provide lifestyle enhancements for millions of people here in the US and on a global basis over the next two years. Here at ALCHERA X, every day is an opportunity for me to make the world a safer and better place to live!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The company’s growth has been characterized by a mix of smooth sailing and turbulent waters. While there have been periods of remarkable progress, marked by expanding market share and revenue streams, there have also been notable challenges that tested the organization’s resilience.
From navigating economic downturns to adapting to rapidly evolving industry landscapes, each hurdle has provided valuable lessons and opportunities for growth. Additionally, internal factors such as scaling operations, maintaining company culture amidst expansion, and managing talent acquisition have presented their own set of complexities. Despite these obstacles, the company’s commitment to innovation, adaptability, and strategic decision-making has ultimately fueled its trajectory towards sustained success.
One of the primary struggles the company faced was in maintaining a balance between innovation and stability. As the market demanded constant evolution, the pressure to innovate quickly sometimes conflicted with the need to ensure the reliability and consistency of existing products or services. This tension often required careful navigation to avoid compromising quality or alienating loyal customers. Moreover, external factors such as regulatory changes or technological disruptions occasionally forced the company to pivot its strategies, requiring swift adaptation to stay competitive.
Overcoming these challenges necessitated a forward-thinking approach, agile leadership, and a willingness to embrace change as an opportunity rather than a setback. Through perseverance and strategic foresight, the company has not only weathered storms but emerged stronger and more resilient, poised for continued growth in the ever-evolving market landscape.
