Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Esterson.
Hi Connor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My acting journey was sparked by my fascination with a diaper commercial when I was five years old. I saw a bunch of kids dancing and immediately went to my dad and said, “I wanna do dat. I’m a big kid now!” I was guided by my parents, who recognized and nurtured my creative potential.
After many auditions, a few commercials, and episodics, I landed a lead role in the popular Netflix movie “Spy Kids Armageddon,” playing Tony Tango-Torrez. Since then, I’ve shot a Christmas movie and had a recurring guest star role on “Quantum Leap” reboot.
On the other side of the camera, I’m an aspiring screenwriter and currently working on my very first script with George Gallo and Academy Award-winning writer Nick Vallelonga. It’s surreal, it’s “Home Alone meets The Godfather.”
I’m also creating a line of backpacks through my company, Brainstorm Supply Co. www.brainstormsupplyco.com
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a smooth road, no challenges. Just kidding. School and work don’t mix. Schools lack the flexibility for young actors to pursue their dreams. Even with good grades, work permit, and a qualified teacher on set, schools don’t allow actors to miss more than a certain number of days. The fear of getting kicked out of school is like no other.
Also, memorization when I was younger was near impossible for me. Sometimes, I had one day to learn a five- or six-page script. That was tough for me at six. While other kids were playing and doing kid things, I had to go home and memorize scenes for my next audition. I loved it, but it was challenging.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Acting, writing, music, and more!
The biggest role thus far in my young career came last year when I starred in the Netflix movie “Spy Kids: Armageddon,” when I shared the screen with Hollywood giants like Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez. The film revolves around the children of super-secret agents who must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world from a dangerous computer virus. It was a remarkable experience. What kid doesn’t dream of being a spy? I got to live that dream while fulfilling another dream of working with director Robert Rodriguez on such a great franchise.
Then, late last year, I whipped up a six-page treatment on my own, which I showed to a family friend, who in turn took it to the legendary George Gallo, who then shared it with Oscar winner Nick Vallelonga. They all agreed that my idea had legs, so we started collaborating to hammer out a script, which we’re about to pitch around town. Called “Little Wiseguy,” the movie is about a boy who befriends an aging mobster living next door while navigating the pressures of middle school and being raised by a single mother. Think “Home Alone” meets “The Godfather.”
I’ll also be appearing in an upcoming film called “Santa’s Chair.” It’s a family story with a lot of heart. Currently in post-production, the story follows a troubled, colorblind little girl who makes a Santa Chair that grants wishes for others to save her mom’s tiny mountain town café from closing before Christmas.
I’m super proud of everything I’ve accomplished thus far, especially the fact that I’m one of the youngest screenwriters in Hollywood history! How cool is that?!?
I think what sets me apart from others is my focus, my drive to succeed, and my determination. I also know how to build a great team. I surround myself with great minds, great talent, and great food.
One of my main goals is to become a director.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Creativity and kindness. Both go a long way in life and in Hollywood.
