Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Mark.
Hi Paul, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was young, I always needed to have some sort of artistic outlet whether it was through drawing, painting, or skateboarding. I was infatuated with the feeling of creating something from nothing. In college, I started to pursue a degree in Illustration until I got into a really bad accident at work that created mobility issues with my dominant arm, and I had to relearn how to draw and paint again. During that time, my now wife purchased me a Canon AE-1, I took a film class, and I quickly became obsessed with the every aspect of photography.
I decided to completely switch my major to photojournalism and give this newfound medium a shot. I had been known for having my camera attached to my hip. One day, an acquaintance asked me if I would be open to shooting their backyard wedding. I was confident but nervous and took on the wedding for almost nothing just to get the opportunity to do it. That was when I knew this was the career path for me, and 12 years later, I am still here documenting love and learning, and my passion for it just increases year after year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s always a learning curve in the industry of photographing weddings. It’s not only about making timeless pictures but for me; it’s how you show up for the clients. Starting a business was challenging especially when you’re the face, artist, accountant, administration, editor, etc. I struggled to fully believe I could make it happen until I started networking and seeing that I wasn’t the only one.
Early on, I shot the majority of my own weddings alone. I was proud of the work, but I knew something was missing. For me I was missing the community, and as much as I’d like to say I did this alone… It’s false. Getting out of my own way was the best thing I did to sharpen my skills and craft. I put myself out there and second shot a ton, and networked with other talented photographers who were willing to share their approaches, and in turn, I made great friends.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a portrait and wedding photographer that specializes in serving couples with artful and classic imagery. There’s a story to always tell in every setting, and I do my best to be aware of others’ emotions so it’s felt through an image. Shooting photo-journalistically allows me to make connections intentionally when emotions are high and people are celebrating each moment that passes with their friends and families.
Although shooting raw emotions is a huge priority of mine and is a staple in my work, I also love movement and getting artsy with my couples. I want my clients to see the rules of photography being bent whether they know it or not, I want them to walk away knowing that’s their true personalities were represented with the best intentions and that they participated in making art.
I’m proud of the work I get to do and the support from family and friends. You know who you are!
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is the present way I’m living now. I have a beautiful wife, two kids, and a dream job.
