Today we’d like to introduce you to Yiran Zhang.
Yiran, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Recently, I’m using dating apps. I’ve noticed a pattern: conversations often revolve around where one lives, where one’s from – the distinct markers of identity. Yet, as I stand introspectively before society’s mirror, my own essence remains an enigmatic tapestry, a blend of complexity and depth, defying simple categorization.
My story is rooted in the ancient wisdom of Laozi and the Daoist ethos, a philosophical lineage that perceives the world as an intricate web of interconnected entities. My name, “Yiran,” is a reflection of this worldview, echoing the belief in the harmonious unity and natural evolution of all things. The cultural fabric of my upbringing is richly imbued with my grandfather’s narratives. A figure sculpted by the transformative forces of China’s Cultural Revolution and educated at the prestigious Huangpu Military Academy; he imparted narratives that spanned across continents and eras—from the grandeur of tsarist palaces to the pulsating heart of South American literature, the refined lines of Bauhaus design, and the philosophical allusion of ancient China. These stories kindled a relentless curiosity within me, a desire to explore and understand the myriad cultures that populate our world. My odyssey has taken me through the vibrant streets of Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, and Los Angeles. In each city, I have embraced the essence of their cultures, harmonizing them with my own narrative. This journey has been one of dismantling the barriers of history, technology, and culture, integrating these elements into a singular thread that weaves through the continuum of my identity and perspective. This exploration of self, culture, and place is not just a personal narrative but a living example of the fluidity and complexity of identity in our increasingly interconnected world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Waving with threads of diverse cultures and experiences, I have often discerned the inherent contradictions in seemingly static entities. As a woman navigating the collectivist cultural landscape, where roles as a daughter, sister, and student intertwine, I’ve become acutely aware of the unspoken societal taboos surrounding femininity. In this context, where harmony and inclusion reign supreme, the expression of negative emotions is often stifled, leading to a culture where mental health issues are stigmatized, not openly addressed. This stark realization sparked a quest within me to explore design solutions that delve into the complexities of mental health, particularly within collectivist societies.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My journey in design transcended traditional problem-solving, venturing into the speculative realm. Understanding challenges, I want to solve resist a one-size-fits-all solution, I embraced the uniqueness of each individual’s mental health journey, influenced by their personal and cultural background. Embarking on a path of participatory research, I engaged with individuals from collectivist cultures through semi-open questionnaires. This approach recognized the inherent challenges of direct communication about negative emotions in societies where authentic feelings are often concealed in social interactions. To navigate this landscape, I turned to speculative design, using future scenarios as a canvas and augmented reality (AR) as a tool to articulate the unspoken. This method sought to unveil the societal taboos surrounding mental health, sparking community dialogues and drawing attention to this often-overlooked issue. My project aimed to gather insights from group discussions to evolve the initiative further. This approach differed from my prior user-centric designs; it was an exploration focused on depicting a phenomenon through open-ended narratives, serving as catalysts for societal discourse on mental health in collectivist cultures. This exploration transcends mere solution-finding; it challenges and reimagines our approach to complex social issues through the transformative lens of design.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Many recognize me for my contributions as a digital artist and product designer; however, a lesser-known facet of my creativity is my passion for manicure artistry during my leisure time. This pursuit offers a unique medium through which to express my artistic vision, distinct from the immediacy of digital creation, where the outcome is immediately visible on-screen. Manicure art, by contrast, involves blending various materials with a certain unpredictability, culminating in a reveal that only materializes upon completion of all ten fingers. This divergence in mediums enriches my creative expression, providing a delightful unpredictability inherent to the tactile experience of manicure art.
