Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Pineda.
Hi Jill, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am originally from Manila, Philippines, and I moved to the US with my family in 2003. I initially found myself immersed in the world of dance both as a performer and a dance teacher as I navigated the fiercely competitive landscape of Los Angeles, where opportunities were scarce amidst thousands of exceptional talent. I’m sure a lot of artists out there would agree that booking gigs in the dance industry is an enormously challenging task. There were definitely moments when I felt very defeated. However, a fortuitous suggestion from a mentor to explore commercial acting driven by my unique background and appearance led me down a new path filled with refreshing opportunities. I tried out commercial acting, went to auditions, and eventually landed principal roles where I got to be myself, speak Tagalog, or even cook Filipino food. It has been an exhilarating experience! I just love what I do!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving to Los Angeles has been the most pivotal decision I have made in my life. I have experienced my highest of highs and lowest of lows in this city, both in my professional and in my personal life. It’s an exciting city, but it’s also a tough one! And the entertainment business is at a higher level of complexity – it is not for the faint of heart! Coming from a culture that differs entirely from LA’s, I was certainly struck by a powerful dose of culture shock, too. Initially, I grappled with the language barrier and felt like I didn’t quite fit in. Alongside that, I experienced persistent feelings of homesickness. However, I focused and filled my days with balancing my day job, dance training, acting classes, and attending auditions. Though demanding, I found solace in being able to hone my craft on a daily basis. It served as my haven. I’ve also learned to embrace and leverage my identity in the work I pursue. I just love being in the studio dancing and taking acting classes. It brings me genuine happiness despite the obstacles I encountered along the journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an actor and content creator, I perceive each artist as distinct and I attribute my uniqueness to my multicultural upbringing, coupled with my background in dance and fashion. Fluency in English and Tagalog has also given me an advantage, especially in roles that call for authentic portrayal of experiences of people that look like myself. Aside from being a mom, I am most proud of being able to represent my culture, my way.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success means having the freedom to unwind, spend quality time with loved ones, and indulge in personal interests without financial concerns. Ultimately, success is embodying a healthy, peaceful lifestyle free from stress.
